President's Message from Carol Watts

Can't wait to "see" you at our Virtual Holiday Party on Tuesday, Dec. 8, 5 p.m.
Cheers to all of you at the start of this very special holiday season!

While we wish we could be meeting in person to share our friendship, we will celebrate online with a virtual holiday party on Tuesday, Dec. 8, starting at 5 p.m. If you haven’t yet signed up, please REGISTER HERE now. In the comfort of your own home, dress up a little (at least from the waist up!!) and gather your favorite beverage. Then log onto Zoom for casual conversations and some great music from our own Leanne Rzepiela-Weatherly! Thank you Sandy Mory and Sally Pyle for planning this fun event!

We have a very strong committee working on a study that is reviewing the League’s position on the San Jose City Charter sections related to form of government and representation. Led by Vicki Alexander and Virginia Holtz, the team is conducting an extensive search of resource material and will soon begin interviews with individuals who can bring expertise, experience and different perspectives. Watch for additional updates in 2021 prior to an all-members consensus meeting. The final position will be submitted for approval at our next Annual Meeting in June, 2021.

There is no Lunch with League in December, but plan to be with us again on Jan. 21 when we are pleased to present Rick Callender, the CEO of Valley Water and a statewide leader of NAACP, speaking on “Why Environmental Justice Matters.” Also note that we would like your input on future topics and speakers. See below for a link to a quick survey.
See you on Tuesday, Dec. 8 at 5 p.m.!! Stay well and be safe for the rest of this 2020 year. Happy New Year!!

Donate to support civic education and citizen engagement
As you consider possible end-of-the-year gifts to charities, please think of our League's important contributions to citizen education and engagement during the 2020 election season. Did you know that member dues cover only a small portion of our activities, and that our League supports its voter service projects almost entirely through donations? Please help our League continue its valuable work in 2021. Our democracy will thank you!

We are a 501(c)3 charitable organization. All dues and contributions are tax deductible. DONATE ONLINE HERE
Help us plan Lunch With League events for 2021
We welcome your input on topics and speakers for the monthly Lunch With League events in 2021. Please take this quick survey to give us your thoughts. Thank you!

Sign up to participate in interviews with State Assembly and Senate members
The Action Committee will be scheduling interviews with our elected state legislators in the coming months to discuss some League priorities and concerns and learn about the legislation these members will be introducing in the upcoming session. This annual program by local Leagues in California encourages League members to “meet” with State Assembly and State Senate members in their respective districts.

If you have an interest in participating, please contact Gloria Chun Hoo, chair of the Action Committee. Our San Jose/Santa Clara League has eight legislators we will be contacting. See https://www.lwvsjsc.org/iterviews-with-our-representitaves for the list of past interviews and Senate and Assembly districts we cover.

Some of the interviews may be conducted with nearby local Leagues who share representatives. Each participant plays a key role in the interview session and this is a key way Leagues across California become engaged in our government and policies of interest.

The Action Committee meets the third Monday of each month at 3 p.m. on Zoom. Anyone interested is welcome to join. Contact Gloria Chun Hoo to receive the Zoom link.

LAST CALL!

Tuesday, Dec. 8, 5-6:30 p.m.

The League's annual Holiday Party is only a few days away.
Register now for an evening of friendship and celebration.
