An Interview With Bethany - Virtual Supports
|
|
Bethany recently shared with us how Virtual Supports has impacted her life in a positive way. Check out her interview below to learn more about Virtual Supports.
What is your favourite part of Virtual Supports?
Seeing my friends on-line and learning new things. Danielle and Paisley are wonderful. They help me with my activities, and Sandra is a funny lady!
Have you made new friends/reconnected with old ones?
I have made some new friends and now text and video chat with them, as well as keeping connected with my old friends from school. I see a lot of people from Heroes Basketball online. I would like to meet my new friends in person one day.
What are some of your favourite Virtual Support sessions?
I love Around the World! We go on virtual ‘fieldtrips’ and learn about countries and places on maps. Tech Tuesday is another favourite. We learn about apps and how to use computers, phones, iPads, and tablets. I like to practice skills in Tech Tuesday in case I do virtual college one day. Spring into Spring and other crafts are fun to do. I love Music with Candice. We always have a great time. In Wellness Wednesday we learn about how to be healthy in our body and our mind. I would like to see some math and science classes in the future.
Does Virtual Supports make you laugh/feel happy?
Yes, I am always happy when I look at my calendar and have a lot of classes scheduled. All of the workers are funny!
What are some things you have created that have made you feel proud?
I painted a wonderful winter snowman scene with Brianne. She is a great artist. I made a healthy mango smoothie in Wellness Wednesday and I made it again with my family since then. I made really nice Christmas cards and gift bags using stencils to give away to family and friends, and they were all really impressed! I painted and planted flower pots and gave some plants to my aunt, it was nice to give a gift that I made myself and it made my aunt happy. I made a wire wreath with fabric knots, that craft was really hard for me at first, my mom kept showing me how to do it, and I got the hang of it, and because I can see that I was able to learn and do something that was hard for me, I’m super proud of myself that I didn’t give up!
Would you ever want to stop joining Virtual Support sessions?
Sometimes I feel I want to take a little break from Virtual Supports, but I’m super happy that I can choose to participate in classes whenever I want to. I can’t drive so I can’t always see my friends, and I for sure can’t see all of them at once like I can online. All of the people together make it exciting with lots of energy! I have learned a lot and made a lot of friends. I am very happy.
When Bethany first started to join Virtual Supports, her mom had to assist her with the entire process.
One day, her mom was late getting home and Bethany had asked her earlier to help her sign up for sessions. When she arrived at home she let Bethany know that she could now help her navigate My Community Hub to sign up for more sessions, Bethany told her that she had already done it and printed her new schedule! She had done it all! Here are the list of steps required, so you can get a pretty clear sense of just how HUGE this truly is.

Ensemble is Searching for Volunteers
|
|
Ensemble is a parent-directed resource for families caring for a child with a disability that provides support from birth through adulthood. The name, Ensemble, is French for “together” and was chosen for the strength and resiliency found in the connections built between families and within the community.
Ensemble inspires possibilities for children by promoting family leadership so that families thrive and become active members in the community.
Ensemble was founded in 2000 by two moms whose lives have been affected by their children’s diagnosis of a disability. These moms understood the importance of connecting to others as the first step in helping families cope with the challenges of raising a child with a disability.
We meet ONCE a month via telephone or Zoom at 7pm for approximately 1 hour. By joining our committee, you will be able to openly share experiences and make suggestions. These opinions will provide valuable family perspectives everyone will benefit from.
Please consider making your voice heard.

Connecting to Family Networks
|
|
Visiting craft sales, baking cookies for neighbours, volunteering for a food drive, getting involved again can feel amazing.
But life also feels chaotic. We’re still dealing with COVID-19 stress, loss and upheaval. We’re still coping with constant change.
Despite the unknowns, you can take steps. Time to help your loved one live their best life, now, and in the future.
No need to travel this road alone - especially as COVID-19 carries on. Share ideas, advice and support with like - minded families.
Networks are family created and led. Members share ideas, connections and resources. Plus, they connect for fun and recreation. Since Networks meet virtually during COVID-19, it’s a perfect time to check them out.

With Earth Day tomorrow, it’s important to remind ourselves about ways we can do things to protect and preserve our planet. Even a few small changes to the way we live can create positive change in taking care of the Earth. While it may seem daunting to change the way we do things, there are plenty of ways we can create positive change for the planet. Any of these methods can work to help.
Planting something, whether it be trees, flowers or plants for a garden, is one way we can support the Earth. Making sure we turn off our lights when they’re not needed or doing activities that don’t require the use of power is another important way we can take care of the Earth. Energy consumption is an ongoing issue that puts stress on the planet. Utilizing transportation aside from our cars can reduce carbon emissions and protect the Earths ozone layer. Consider getting around by bike or walking whenever you can. Finally, a good habit to get into is picking up trash you see off the ground, even if it isn’t yours.
Another thing to remember is to keep these methods in mind all the time, not just on Earth Day. Caring for the planet is a year-round issue and helping it shouldn't be dedicated to a single day.

Recycled Crafts
Cut Paper Art From Recycled Magazines!
|
|
Recycle magazines and create beautiful artwork at the same time, this cut paper art is not only colorful, but very easy to make!
Supplies:
- old magazines
- 8″ x 10″ picture frames
- black and brown construction paper
- glue sticks
- craft blade
- cutting mat
|
|
Take the frame apart. You will be working with just the cardboard back of the frame. Cut strips of colorful magazine pages, folding them lengthwise and gluing them down with your glue stick. Glue them down with the folded edges approximately 1/4″ apart.
|
|
Try to use bright colored pages for the best contrast with your dark construction paper.
|
|
Use the craft knife to trim the edges of all the paper to match the edges of the picture frame back.
|
|
Trim your construction paper to match the size of your picture. Then trim an addition inch off of the bottom so that the finished art will show all the colored strips along the bottom. Draw your pattern onto the paper, and then use a craft knife to cut out your picture.
If you would like the patterns, you can download the full size pdf versions of the potted plant and the butterflies here.
|
|
Depending on how you are cutting it out, you might have to glue your construction paper down in sections.
|
|
The final step is to put your frame back together!
