An Encouraging Word
Encouraging Word Article
April 2021

For the wrong reason

In Matthew the 6 chapter it speaks of how not to respond when you give ; making a show of yourself. This type of behavior is detrimental in other areas. There are those who will do favors and deeds for people to see and ignore the needs of their own families.  This may sound strange, but is more common than one might think.  A person such as this is seeking the praise of men rather than fulfilling the obligation of taking care of home.  This type of bad behavior is evident in relationships; couples not giving proper attention to each other.  In the public eye they're perfect, but at home the relationship is cold.
The point is we must do what is right because it is right, not to obtain praises of men. If we find ourselves operating in the fore mention manor, we need to repent. For those who are born again, we are ambassadors for Christ.  We need not be hypocritical.

Till next time,
Pastor J

Behind Closed Doors

So what’s behind that dapper smile, that self assurance, that all round church going 'good' person? You could be looking into the face of someone who has a “Doctor Jekyll, Mr. Hyde” (good and evil self) personality. Or put another way, it can be a person who acts a certain way in one setting, only to be the complete opposite behind closed doors. They can be a narcissist or a person "who thinks more highly of themselves than they ought" Romans12:3.
Or you could be looking in the face of someone committing domestic violence.

To be clear, domestic violence is not always what you think it is. It's not always displayed in a physical way—but can be the destructive phases of mental or emotional abuse. Abusers can hide out in clear view of friends, family, neighbors, co-workers, the community, and the church. Abusers can be spouses, partners, parents, caretakers, church leaders, or bosses. In most cases abusers do not want to be detected. Maintaining control over their subject is important—-even suggesting to their subject that it won’t be any point to reporting their complaint because everyone will think they are crazy or wrong about their feelings.

“Unfortunately, emotional abuse is often minimized or overlooked—even by the person experiencing it. The aim of emotional abuse is to chip away at the subjects feelings of self-worth and independence—leaving the subject feeling that there’s no way out of the relationship, or that without the abusive partner, they have nothing.”

“Does your partner:
  • humiliate or yell at you?
  • criticize you and put you down?
  • ignore or put down your opinions or accomplishments?
  • blame you for their own abusive behavior?
  • see you as property or a sex object, rather than as a person?”
  • diminish your self worth behind closed doors?

“What to do If you’re being mentally and emotionally abused, trust your instincts. Know that it isn’t right and you don’t have to live this way.
If you fear immediate physical violence, call 911 or your local emergency services.
If you aren’t in immediate danger and you need to talk or find someplace to go, call the National Domestic Abuse Hotline at 800-799-7233. This 24/7 hotline can put you in touch with service providers and shelters across the United States.

Otherwise, your choices come down to the specifics of your situation. Here’s what you can do:
  • Accept that the abuse isn’t your responsibility. Don’t try to reason with your abuser. You may want to help, but it’s unlikely they’ll break this pattern of behavior without professional counseling. That’s their responsibility.
  • Disengage and set personal boundaries. Decide that you won’t respond to abuse or get sucked into arguments. Stick to it. Limit exposure to the abuser as much as you can.
  • Exit the relationship or circumstance. If possible, cut all ties. Make it clear that it’s over and don’t look back. You might also want to find a therapist who can show you a healthy way to move forward.
  • Give yourself time to heal. Reach out to supportive friends and family members. If you’re in school, talk to a teacher or guidance counselor. If you think it will help, find a therapist who can help you in your recovery.
Leaving the relationship is more complex if you’re married, have children, or have commingled assets. If that’s your situation, seek legal assistance. Here are a few other resources:

What are the COVID-19 Stimulus Payments?
As of the end of February 2021, the federal government had distributed two payments to eligible families to help during the economic crisis caused by COVID-19. In early March of 2021, Congress passed a third relief package, which included more relief payments (often referred to as stimulus checks, Economic Impact Payments, or Recovery Rebates). This site will help you understand if you will receive or should have received any of these payments, and provide guidance on what you should do to receive the funding you are eligible for.
Who is eligible for a Stimulus Check?
The vast majority of Michigan residents are eligible to receive a stimulus check from the federal government this year. Even if you have no income, you are still eligible, but need to take action to receive your stimulus payment. This includes individuals with low or no earnings who normally don't file taxes. Every American adult earning less than $75,000 (or couples earning less than $150,000) is eligible for a stimulus check from the federal government this year. While this site is geared toward Michigan residents, the information is applicable nationwide.

FEMA to Help Pay Funeral Costs for COVID-19-Related Deaths
WASHINGTON -- In early April, FEMA will begin providing financial assistance for funeral expenses incurred after Jan. 20, 2020 for deaths related to coronavirus (COVID-19) to help ease some of the financial stress and burden caused by the pandemic. The policy was finalized today, and FEMA is now moving rapidly to implement this funeral assistance program nationwide.
"At FEMA, our mission is to help people before, during and after disasters," said Acting FEMA Administrator Bob Fenton. “The COVID-19 pandemic has caused immense grief for so many people. Although we cannot change what has happened, we affirm our commitment to help with funeral and burial expenses that many families did not anticipate.
