The Power of Teamwork, Motivation & a Positive Attitude
|
|
At TASC, we celebrate all of the wins for our clients. From the seemingly small wins to the major life-saving successes, and everything in between. One client, Bryan decided to raise his hand to say, “it’s time to tell my success story.”
In 2021, Bryan was hospitalized for nearly four months. Once he was discharged from the hospital, Bryan needed much more assistance than what he was previously used to. After the hospital, he experienced severe weight loss, the inability to walk, partial loss of use in one hand, and the need for support in most everyday functions.
Returning from the hospital was a life-altering experience for Bryan.
Before his time in the hospital, he lived a very independent life doing the majority of activities on his own, from cooking and cleaning to taking public transportation to his favorite store, Amoeba Records in Hollywood.
It was critical to get Bryan on the road to recovery – back to his cherished life of independence.
A plan was formed with Bryan, TASC employees and a home health nurse to ensure he received the necessary support to bring him back to health, and the independent life he knew and deeply missed before being hospitalized.
“Structure, consistency and lots of motivation caused me to see the last of 2021…and the New Year 2022…and all the important holidays from my birthday and Christmas,” said Bryan. “So today I’m here and still fighting and survived to tell my story because at one point I lost all hope. Thank you, TASC.”
Bryan continues to work with his TASC team to bring him back to full health. He is currently in a healthy weight range, has increased his mobility and regained most use of his hand. With the motivation and support from his TASC team, Bryan is in a positive mindset to continue his healthy recovery.
“Once I fully recover, I can’t wait to take the bus and train to the public library and Hollywood on my own.”

Thankful for Volunteers From Pepperdine University & Fernley High School

Pepperdine University Student Volunteers
Students from Pepperdine University volunteered with TASC during their Spring Break for three days in March for their Project Serve 2022.
The students had busy days helping TASC in various areas of the organization.
The first day, they assisted with the Zoom classes to help keep clients engaged. They assisted in two classes: “Weekend in Review/Social Skills” and “Who, What, Where Am I.” Additionally, they helped TASC's IT Administrator to organize technology items.
The second day was filled with animals at Sanctuary Animal Assisted Therapy. At the Sanctuary, they helped clean, weed, socialize the farm animals, and most importantly, gave the calfs a bath.
On the third day, the students compiled packages of kits for clients to make ice cream at home. Thanks to their help, TASC clients at home or in program were able to join in the ice cream making activity on Zoom the following week.
Thank you, Pepperdine student volunteers! Your service helps TASC in supporting our clients!

Ice cream for everyone! Thanks to our virtual environment, Fernley High School/Western Nevada College student, Lilly B. was able to lead an ice cream making class on Zoom...all the way from Nevada!
All the ingredients were prepared for TASC clients by the Pepperdine student volunteers and either dropped off at their homes or given to them during program hours to make individual-sized portions of ice cream, complete with a sprinkle topping.
Lilly works at a local shop in Fernley, Nevada called Steve's Homemade Ice Cream. In addition to learning how to make ice cream, the class also learned what it's like working at an ice cream shop and were given employment tips if they chose to work in a customer service position.
Thank you, Lilly for leading a fun (and delicious) class!
Note that TASC welcomes volunteers to help lead Zoom classes if you may have a hobby or talent that you'd like to share. To make these arrangements, reach out to: Christie (chight@taschq.com)

Celebrating Autism Awareness Month
|

April is Autism Awareness/Acceptance Month, where we recognize the contributions to our society from people on the autism spectrum, as well as understand the needs of those on the spectrum and their families in order for them to live a fulfilled life.
The year's theme from the Autism Society is to #CelebrateDifferences for Autism Acceptance Month, recognizing the array of experiences within the Autism community and emphasizing the need for equitable access to support, services and resources.
On April 27 from 1-2:30PM (est), a free and virtual event is open to the public. It is the 9th Annual Autism Awareness Month Special Event, Animating the Future for Exceptional Minds.
The event will feature Exceptional Minds, a non-profit organization in Los Angeles that prepares young adults on the autism spectrum for careers in the digital arts and entertainment industry. The event will include a sampling of their animation, an overview of their training program, and an interview and Q&A with their students and staff.

Occupational Therapy Month
|
|
In the video above, join TASC's Occupational Therapist Lillian Sun for 5 things we do for a positive start to the day.
|
|
Occupational Therapy month is in April. TASC celebrates this profession and the occupational therapists that are a part of TASC's team. These therapists help TASC's clients to succeed in the areas needed that occupy their time.
You may ask yourself, "what is Occupational Therapy?"
According to Aota.org, "Occupational therapy is a science-driven, evidence-based profession that enables people of all ages to participate in daily living or live better with injury, illness, or disability. This is accomplished through designing strategies for everyday living and customizing environments to develop and maximize potential."
