Letters from the CEO & Chair
Dear Friends,

Tax time of year is one of the most enlightening times of year for our household. The exercise of examining a year’s worth of impulse buys, long-deliberated purchases, and everything in between, puts into sharp relief the priorities and values that have been setting the course of our financial trajectory for another year. And each year adds up to distinct seasons, and seasons add up to a lifetime.

As we at The Valley Economic Alliance close the books on the third quarter of our fiscal year which coincides with our program delivery year, we are heartened by our financial and programmatic positions, because we are poised to confidently step into our fourth quarter with the promise of a very bright future.

Oh, What A Night! It was truly magical to have the whole gang back together in person once again at the Valley of the Stars Gala at the Castaway in Burbank on April 8th. Thank you to the almost 400 of you that attended, all of our amazing sponsors, our great Alliance staff that put it all together, and a special thanks to my Calabasas neighbor and Master of Ceremonies extraordinaire Jerry O’Connell.

What makes the Valley of the Stars Gala so special every year are the incredible awardees and their Valley stories. This year was no exception. Christy Vega of our beloved Casa Vega Restaurant in Sherman Oaks telling how she kept the family business going and her employees paid throughout the Covid shutdown. Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt CEO Amit Kleinberger detailing how an international business sensation was born right here in the Valley. Ken Craft inspiring us with how his Hope of the Valley organization is housing and helping the homeless every single day. And Los Angeles Rams great and NFL Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson describing how he has devoted his post football life to helping others in our community. The Valley is a very special place filled with very special people.

Economic Development & Small Busines
Procurement as Pathway to Next Level Growth
The Valley Economic Alliance held its most recent virtual Next Level Growth Series entitled “Valley Builds & Moves: Private & Public Projects You Can Bid On To Shape the San Fernando Valley” on Thursday, April 14. The event provided a sound opportunity to explore issues of procurement, contracting, major events, and client/vendor relationships affecting the financial trajectory of the region.

Teresa LeFevre, vice president of supplier diversity for Comerica Bank– the event sponsor– demonstrated the role diversity, equity, and inclusion play in the bidding process. Participants learned about new methods of obtaining contractor assistance while bidding for sought-after projects, such as scheduling personal consultations to pitch lenders and reconciling financial statements before proceeding in the process. Like many Supplier Diversity Programs, Comerica’s program focuses on increasing the company’s qualified database of businesses that are confirmed to be at least 51% owned by women, minorities, veterans, and other traditionally disadvantaged groups. Most of their purchases are in technology and real estate, but there are many other areas of purchasing as well, such as design and construction. Business owners interested in registering as a potential supplier should complete a profile here

In this information-packed program, Valley entrepreneurs also learned about their eligibility status in bidding on public infrastructure projects. The Alliance offered learning resources to business owners during a presentation led by Michelle Quirante, account manager for the City of Los Angeles and Metro’s Contractor Development and Bonding Program. Michelle shared a list of projects being built in each City Council district of the City of Los Angeles’s San Fernando Valley in the next 3-6 months, totalling approximately $200 Million in construction, sidewalk repair, and more. Complimentary technical assistance is available to help construction-related and other companies to obtain the bonding needed for public contracts, create compelling qualification statements, assemble accurate estimates to bid on contracts and more. Contractors can learn more about technical assistance available here.

We invite you to register for additional upcoming programs at TheValley.net/Events.
Economic Development Committee Recap
The Alliance hosted its monthly Economic Development Committee Meeting, which immediately followed the Next Level Growth Series event on Thursday, April 14. April’s topic focused on the long-awaited arrival of the City of Los Angeles’ Regional Alliance Marketplace for Procurement initiative– also known as RAMP. Budding companies interested in doing business with the region’s government agencies and established corporations attended this informative presentation led by Shannon Hoppes, chief procurement officer for the City of Los Angeles. She discussed how the new portal works to ensure equitable opportunities for small and minority businesses seeking competitive contracts and procurement. She also shared that RAMP is expected to receive over $10 Billion in procurement opportunities within its first year, an opportunity that would be advantageous to many Valley business owners seeking to invest in this public-private partnership.
By convening corporate leaders around the topic of economic development, The Alliance is creating change-making synergy throughout the community that not only promotes relevant thought leadership surrounding the topic, but also supports job creation and improves the general quality of life in the Valley. Businesses can register for RAMP at RAMPLA.org.

Additional upcoming programs and committee meetings are free, but registration is required. Register at TheValley.net/Events.

Housing Creates Communities
City of San Fernando Co-Sponsors Alliance Housing Campaign
City of San Fernando City Council approved a partnership with The Alliance to co-sponsor the Housing Creates Communities campaign and inform the community of the benefits of having affordable housing in the San Fernando Valley.

The City will support the campaign by sharing social media messaging and installing street banners along major transportation corridors to strengthen the reach of the campaign in San Fernando, and demonstrate the City's leadership in addressing the need for housing. The Alliance’s committee for Livable and Sustainable Communities organized and launched the campaign in 2021 to raise awareness of housing shortage and the needs for more affordable housing in the San Fernando Valley area. The campaign promotes the following seven reasons to support more housing:

1. Housing Creates Healthier Communities.
2. Housing Can Increase Property Values.
3. Housing Creates a Better Start for Kids.
4. Housing Creates Jobs.
5. Housing Reduces Traffic Congestion and Creates a Cleaner Environment.
6. Housing Creates More Equitable Neighborhoods.
7. Housing Keeps Teachers and Public Safety Officers Close to Our Neighborhoods.

This campaign supports one of the goals of the State Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD), and the City’s Housing Element for promoting awareness on the need for more affordable housing units in the City. The San Fernando City Council approved co-sponsorship for this campaign during the March 21, 2022 City Council meeting. The City of San Fernando is one of five partner cities of The Alliance, the others being Burbank, Calabasas, Glendale, and Los Angeles.

Environmental Sustainability
Save Our Water Campaign
On April 1, the CA Department of Water Resources published findings from its fourth snow survey of the season, finding the snowpack statewide to measure just 38% of average for this date. In particular, prolonged warmer temperatures have reduced the snowpack of the Sierra to 25% of its average for this time of year, which is concerning since it provides approximately one third of the state’s water supply. The Save Our Water campaign raises awareness of the issue and what residents and businesses can do to be water wise.

Join The Alliance for our Sustainability Forum on April 21 at 10:00 AM to learn more about how you can conserve water, use renewable energies, reduce pollution, and reduce costs by operating in more environmentally sustainable ways.
Sustainable Cities
The Alliance is seeking to promote a prosperous, equitable and environmentally sustainable San Fernando Valley region. Learn how our five partner cities are leading the way for our sustainable future:
