Week of 10/6/2022

While we were spared serious effects from Hurricane Ian, many in our state were not. There are a number of good agencies providing support, including the American Red Cross. In other news, most investors are thinking about continued pressure on stock and bond markets. We have reviewed the reasons for this before, including the lingering effects of Covid-related slowdowns, related government support, and resulting inflation. Federal reserve policy has been aggressive. It is important to remember that interest rate increases, like most economic policy, can take many months to impact the economy. The markets have moved ahead of the real economic impact, especially in mortgages. Housing has been affected by these measures and as that expense comprises a large part of the inflation calculation, some relief may be coming.

We think Brad McMillan’s new market thoughts video is worth a watch. He looks at the good and bad from September, and where we might be headed. A key selling point of the new Apple Watch and iPhone 14 is crash detection. It works but isn’t foolproof. While a helpful feature, it’s not the best reason to upgrade devices. Wrigley Field is one of baseball's most treasured stadiums. If you’ve never been there, you can enjoy some of the magic via this neat drone tour. A study indicates that 2-5 hours of free time in a day boosted happiness. Having too much free time can decrease happiness as much as too little.

Q: I’m having a hard time knowing if I qualify for student loan forgiveness. What are the criteria? A: Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem completely established yet. Just last week, it was announced that borrowers who previously consolidated with private entities may not be eligible. This might affect 700-800 thousand borrowers. Loan consolidation has long been a very good financial choice for many loan holders. Eliminating them from this program is unfortunate. The program itself is facing numerous legal challenges. It may be politically advantageous, but will be expensive and possibly inflationary. Many will benefit from this, but it has its unintended consequences.
