FROM THE PASTOR
Rev. Rebekah Abel Lamar
Someone asked me recently why I am a pastor, and I realized I probably need a more succinct answer to the question. I believe in Jesus Christ, but so do lots of people who aren't pastors. I love the church, but many other believers do as well. I feel called to serve those in need, but plenty of other non-religious organizations do that very well.
The bottom line is I still believe that the church is one of the primary means by which Christ's kingdom is shown to the world. The church has done this so poorly at times, it hurt a lot of people in the process, but I can't bring myself to give up on it. And for some reason, one I can't fully explain, God called me to leadership in the broken body of Christ that is the church. And I am grateful beyond words for that call, and for the fact it led me to you.
I'm still working on my answer, but my thinking about it makes me ask you: why are you a Christian?
What is the answer you would give to someone who had no experience with the church?
Or, someone who has had a terrible experience with church?
Perhaps if we all got better at answering these questions clearly, we would be better prepared to serve in the way we are called.
Grace & Peace,
Rebekah

PARKING LOT
The State of Alabama has begun issuing new tag plates with current year tag renewals. Please make sure that you update your new tag number as you receive them. You may submit new information at this link, or to the church office.
We began our agreement with Premium Parking in November and continue to anticipate a significant boost to the church income for 2022 as a result. As we have made the transition, we are aware that some members have experienced difficulties with getting their vehicles registered or with receiving tickets.
Please remember:
-
GSPC members park for free in the lot at all times.
-
If you have not registered, you may do so at online at gspcmobile.org/parking
- If you have difficulty registering your vehicle online, please contact Heather or Barbara in the church office.
- If you receive a ticket, do not pay it. Please bring the ticket or send a picture of it to Heather or Barbara in the church office and they will take care of it.

Opportunities for Service
Please remember the people our church is serving and those who work with them daily in your prayers.
Cards for Prison Ministry
Urban Ministry Committee will be collecting cards of encouragement and love for our prison ministry. Many of the inmates will not be able to attend funerals or see family and we are called to spread joy to these folks. Who better to assist than our youth? Paper and crayon packets will be available in the Jackson Street entrance soon. Please draw a picture of hope and love and have your children color. We will also have templates for coloring for our ministry. They must be on regular printer paper. Children may sign first names only or may simply sign "Government Street Presbyterian Church." Thank you! If you have any questions, please contact Jane Hale at 251-533-9387.
Cold Weather Clothing Donations
During the month of February, we will be collecting gently worn cold weather clothing items for men. women, and children - such as coats, hats, gloves, scarves. Also, socks are a much needed item for those in shelters. These items will be given to various agencies that distribute clothing to those who are homeless or are in need. There is a box designated for these donations at the Jackson Street entrance.
PB&J for Meals on Wheels
Our 45 Meals on Wheels recipients get a sandwich bag each day, along with their hot meal. The bag has a sandwich and a snack. Peanut butter and jelly is often on the menu we need donations of creamy peanut butter and grape jelly to help fill the pantry for the remainder of the year. There is a donation box in the Jackson Street entrance for these donations.
McKemie Place
GSPC has agreed to provide lunch for up to 40 residents at McKemie Place on the second Friday of each month. Thank you to everyone who has volunteered for this mission over the last three months and into 2022. Due to its funding situation, the agency depends on volunteers to provide both lunch and dinner for the residents. They are looking to find individuals or groups that would be willing to provide a lunch or dinner meal on a regular basis each month. They are especially in need of volunteers to provide lunch meals. So, if you, as an individual, or are a member of a group that might be interested in providing this on a regular basis, please contact them at 251-287-2225.
