GIVING

by Jo Strausz Rosen

As a longtime fundraiser for many wonderful causes, I have learned so much from many of my mentors about the importance of cultivating our donors’ capacity for meaningful generosity. At the same time, fundraising begins in our own homes. As many of us learned as children, we find causes worthy of our hard-earned dollars to support and have felt the good feelings when giving tzedakah. It opens our hearts to kindness and compassion. We appreciate and are inspired by the depth of other people’s spirit of giving and we learn by example for ourselves the importance of giving gifts to make the world a better place.

To Save One Life

Several years back I read with tears of joy the most encouraging news story that still causes chills to tingle down my back. It was the story of a life-saving convoy of truckers, who were flagged down by family and community state troopers at midnight as they were traveling on I-696 in Oak Park. The truckers focused their collective full attention, energy and efforts to save the life of one hurting individual, who wished to jump off the I-696 overpass in our community.

The 13 truckers, guided by state troopers, creatively formed a “bridge” on both east and westbound lanes to rescue and save ONE life. I am truly in awe of this “miracle.”

It is crucial to continually be in a state of profound appreciation and gratitude and to verbalize it aloud. So much dismaying news takes place in our world that reflects the shortcomings of our fellow species, yet this utter act of kindness and partnership by troopers and truckers shattered the majority of media pieces that continue to blast and frighten us, create a sense of instability, discomfort, tension, dissension and, for some, total despondency.

To those troopers and truckers who work endless hours to serve our communities, I say, “You have saved one life! You have indeed saved an entire world.”

Not only is nothing random but everything is meaningful. It was approximately 1 o’clock a.m. when this event occurred. It was ONE life that was spared and saved at ONE.

Furthermore, 1 AM. can also read, “I AM!”

“I Am” tells the truth of who we truly are.

I feel embraced, watched over and protected as do many of our great Oak Park community, by the great Divine Aura and Presence permeating our lives when we affix a mezuzah (sacred scroll containing holy passages and verses of the Torah) to our individual and family doorposts. It is designed and meant to watch over us, our families, our safety, our peace, our health and all that we possess and everything that we are.

I am grateful to be doubly blessed living in Oak Park as is the rest of the community to be surrounded by two larger Mezuzah-like physical and human structures, namely the Oak Park police station and our local station of state troopers, both well-equipped and skilled professionals who are on the alert round-the-clock. May this careful level of safety penetrate our entire world and our sacred land and all the people of Israel.
