Reflections

On Monday, I participated in a Zoom meeting with Bishop Lucinda and the other Senior Wardens from our Deanery. The topic of the meeting was how we were coping with functioning during these stressful times, and what strategies we could use to help us and be a support to our clergy. It was a wonderful meeting and Bishop Lucinda was so encouraging and thoughtful.

I realized, as we all shared our thoughts, that for me, being involved in the running of our church has given me purpose and structure to my day. It would be so easy during these stay at home times, to sink into a lethargic sort of existence, with nothing to look forward to day after day.  I meet with Karen once a week, attend Vestry meetings once a month, write articles for the Friday Journal, help with the church service by being a Liturgical Assistant and periodically read the lessons. I bake bread and wash and iron linens. All these things, except for being an LEM can be done from the safety of my home, but there is interaction with others and a mental and spiritual stimulation that happens, whether I am actually in the church building or not.

As the year ends, and our Annual meeting gets closer, there is an opportunity to serve St. Stephens’s by becoming a member of the vestry. I have been on the vestry for three years and have been Senior Warden for two; one year sharing the responsibilities with Edy. It has been three years of learning and personal growth and developing relationships with my fellow vestry members. My term is ending but I would like to invite you to prayerfully consider being a part of the vestry. St. Stephens needs us all to be a part of keeping us a viable, nurturing influence to our members and our community at large. Serving on the vestry is one way to do that, helping to lead us through these times of uncertainty with hope and love.

Peace,
Susan

From the Rector

Dear friends,

As the days grow shorter, when the sun is out shadowed by the moon, I pray that you are healthy and know that you are God’s beloved always.  Today I offer this poem by Jan Richardson as we prepare for the 3rd Sunday of Advent – Gaudete Sunday – Rejoice!

For Joy

You can prepare,
but still
it will come to you
by surprise,

crossing through your doorway,
calling your name in greeting,
turning like a child
who quickens suddenly
within you.

It will astonish you
how wide your heart
will open
in welcome

for the joy
that finds you
so ready
and still so
unprepared.

Advent blessings,
Karen+

I encourage you to set aside a special place, light a candle, and download the bulletin here as you prepare to worship.

Please send any special prayer requests and/or anniversaries and birthdays to Rev. Karen.

Coming up:

Keeping the conversations going. . .and going. . .and going!

The Rev. Jani Wild and I are facilitating Pastoral Conversations on Racism and yesterday was our 27th week of gathering to learn and talk about a broad spectrum of subjects concerning race in our country.
We follow the same format (a brief introduction followed by a short video, discussion, and prayers ) every week with a different focus.  Last week we discussed reparations.
Please come join us next Thursday at 4:30. Whether it’s the 1st time or the 18th time you’ve attended, please come to learn, process, and share together in a safe space with a faith community.

Your intentions. . . .

Thank you to all who have sent in your pledge cards!  We need to create our budget for 2020 and as it stands now, severe cuts will need to be made.  If you intend to pledge to pledge but haven’t yet, please do so.  If you don’t have a pledge card, you are welcome to send a note by mail to the church marked “Pledge” or drop it in the mail slot in the office door.  You can also use the ‘Donate’ button on our website being sure to indicate what your donation is for.  We certainly understand if you are experiencing financial hardship at this time.  If you are able, we appreciate any small offering you might consider making.  Your financial stewardship is needed and deeply appreciated.
Thank you very much!

Poem from the Garden

Last Friday, the Berkeley Health Officer,
Lisa Hernandez, told ABC7 News:
"You should not meet in person
with anyone you do not
live with. Even in a small group,
and even outdoors with precautions,"
She said: "If you have a social bubble,
it is now popped."

On Friday, I texted our dozen regular
garden volunteers a note:
until the New Year, we're not
going to hold our garden work
parties. Even in a small group.
Even outdoors with precautions.
We will stop. It was hard. It is done.

I had two goals for the garden this year,
one to start the year off,
and one that came later.
The first goal was to acquire a lizard:
to build a garden space with
enough food and shelter,
enough water and rocks,
that a lizard could call it home.

When the pandemic started,
I added a new goal: to run
a garden safe enough that no
one would get sick and no one would
die, because they came to the garden.

This fall, we've had a family of
fence lizards move into the garden.
Catch them sunning themselves and
scurrying in the sandstone and the serpentine.
Last week, Arike found a foot-long
skink -- not skunk, skink -- cuddled
in the donated bricks. So we achieved
the first goal.

And for the second, to my knowledge,
no one has gotten sick, and no one
has died, because they have been
in the garden. It is a preventative goal,
not nearly as fun as a family of lizards,
but one I believe in with my whole heart.

So we will wait to interview trees, wait
to finish filling the beds with good dirt.
We will wait to see each other's winter coats,
see each other's smiling eyes above masks.
We will wait, and in waiting, protect the future.

Food for thought:
Kudos to:
-All who are buying gift cards to help financially support the church and to Janet for coordinating the program.
-Andy for all the work he is doing to spiff up the campus and our Community gardeners
-All who are keeping things going when the going is tough.  Please keep in prayer all those working hard and giving generously of their time, talents, and treasure, to provide worship services for everyone. It is a huge effort and requires flexibility to produce, create bulletins, sing, read lessons, assist in liturgy, set up the altar, follow protocols, and post the services on the website every Sunday!
