Reflections and Thoughts on the Future

By
Tom Seay

Executive Producer & Host
Best of America by Horseback
I trust you are able to ride with good weather and friends during this great trail riding season. This is a great time to take that much needed trip you wished for during the lock down or the pandemic.

I have great news for you concerning future shows and Best of America by Horseback television show. We have been bringing you television shows from all over America, Mexico,
Belize, the Caribbean Islands, the Yukon, Hawaii, Alaska and virtually every state. We have taken thousands of you in-person and millions of viewers with us to such places as the redwoods of California, the Badlands, Old Tombstone, the great northwest, the Rockies, the Blue Ridge Mountains, the northeast areas, including Maine, and all the way down to Florida on the Suwanee River or the bayous of Louisiana. We have ridden so many places in Texas, that it hard to list them. Countless federal lands and state parks across America have hosted us so many times. We have been humbled and honored to do shows such as the Christmas shows for the military families. We must reflect on the Oregon Trail, Santa Fe Trail, Lewis and Clark trail, the pony express trail, the Chisholm Trail and so much more.

  • However, the greatest memories are those of the people we have met. Just ordinary folks like us that love to ride their horses in extraordinary places. Kids at local rodeo events, small home-town parades and local trail club events and especially those riders that become family to us.

Every day, I am blessed to call on their birthday, every friend or previous trail rider on their birthday. I love it and it is a highlight of my day. We have a rule that we will not talk business or upcoming rides. Just a true heart-warming call to everyone we have a number for. I become disappointed when a number has been changed or I learn that someone has passed away. We welcome keeping up with your favorite horse or mule, your family, your grand kids, but most importantly, to talk to you.

The greatest regret of the shows is not being able to go to your hometown or places near you. In the last couple of years, we have been limited to locations by Covid-19, family tragedy or illness, and so many factors beyond our control.

I have worried about these things a great deal and have a way to expand the shows, especially in areas we have not visited lately, such as California, the Northwest, the Midwest, Texas, Arizona, Idaho, Montana and more. I have a plan!
Best of America by Horseback Hosts,
Del Shields and Tom Seay
I have asked our co-host Del Shields, who has been riding by my side for over 16 years, to help me out. He has performed his Western music and poetry at so many rides you know about. He rode with me on the incredible Mexico to Canada adventure. He has been a friend to me without boundaries. He is a true gentleman, incredible horseman, a Christian man, talented performer for the music world, but especially the best friend any man or woman could ever have.

I have asked him to host more shows in more locations across America.
I want him to hear your suggestions of show locations, anywhere in America. No matter how large or small the location, we want to hear from you. We want to hear about your upcoming local rodeos, trail rides or charity events. We want every community that wants to be a part of Best of America by Horseback, to write us with thoughts and suggestions of new locations and events.

Please welcome Del to expand the show and include you in more events, large or small.

I cannot think of anyone that honors America and you more than Del. His private email address is singingpoet_1@hotmail.com. If I can do anything for you, please let me know, as my private email address is tseay10@aol.com.

Free yourself and your family. Never let anything hold you back.
Live life to the fullest and every time you can, do it on horseback.

Mildred Scott
I started riding horses at the age of 11. They weren't mine. I would spend every weekend at a friends house because she had the horses.  We never used saddles. I just jumped on them and rode. (Reader has to remember this was 1962). I did this till I started liking boys.
No more horses till I got married in 1970. Got me a couple of horses, but then got me a beautiful little daughter so I quit riding.
We traveled a lot with my husband's construction company. No horses. I got my nursing degree in 1987. My husband had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.  Didn't really have time for riding but I did get me a couple of horses.
My husband never rode but he went with me.  Rode with friends at Lake Lavon, Texas Trails,  and Trace Trails out of Athens, Texas.  My husband died in 2010. Which made me ride more.
I have ridden in Arkansas at Bar 50 ranch a few times. Friends of mine and I went to Mississippi and rode the trails on the river.
In 2011 I was invited to go to Colorado for the Great Sombrero Horse drive for a week. I Drove 600 to 800 horses 60 miles in 2 days on horse back. I went back the next year to do it again.
In 2015, I met my now husband, Vern
In 2015, I met my now husband Vern Fahnholz on the trail. (just friends).
In 2016 he asked me to go with him on a ride with Best of America by Horseback in Humboldt, KS. Then we went on to the Bolo Club in Tennessee with Tom Seay. We were still just friends.
I have ridden in Arkansas at Falling Water Horse Camp,  and Idle Nook Horse Camp.
Since the I have ridden with Best of America by Horseback Trails Ect. in Midway, AL.  Then Whittemore Farms. Then the Chisholm trail in Kansas cattle drive.  We just finished with Best of America by Horseback at Pinecrest Horse Camp and Eagle Ranch. Always a fantastic time with the Best of America by Horseback family.
Thank you,
Mildred

SINGING TO YOU
By Del Shields

There's a gentle breeze blowing, as I ride along.
I sway in my saddle,
Just singing this song.

My pony's in rhythm.
His hoof beats are true.
I'm trailing and singing just thinking of you.

Through the pine trees and meadows; through the streams that run clear,
All this beauty surrounds me, and I feel God is near.

All my troubles behind me, neath a sky that is blue.
I'll keep riding and singing. I'll be thinking of you.

When tomorrow's sun rises, from that grey eastern sky,
You will find me beside you, where I'll stay by and by.

For I long to be near you. No more days I'll be blue. As we ride stirrups to stirrups, I'll be singing to you.
If interested in acquiring any of my work, I can be contacted at: singingpoet_1@hotmail.com or text or phone 620-433-1819.

Millcreek Manure Spreaders
Millcreek Manufacturing makes a whole line of manure spreaders. One of our favorites is their compact spreader. It is ground driven, so you can pull it with an ATV. A tractor with a PTO is not required. It easily rolls right in your barn to each stall. They have high quality manure spreaders that deliver long term value.

A Joint Effort - Understanding Arthritis
By Carole Herder
Arthritis – A Close up Look

Arthritis means inflammation, pain, or stiffness of the joints. Joints are supported by collateral ligaments, which keep bones in place and synovial fluid, filling the space between the bones providing lubrication to the cartilage.

The cartilage is a matrix of tissue, giving strength to structure. As the joint flexes, the cartilage compresses and expands, forcing minerals and water throughout the spaces providing a shock-absorbing effect. The joint capsule stabilizes the joint, and the synovial membranes and the articular cartilage cushions the bones.
Hoof Function Creates Healthy Joints
There are expansion and contraction in the healthy functioning hoof - movement like a plunger, injecting nutrients, synovial fluid and oxygen throughout the tissue and absorbing shock to keep joints healthy.

If the hoof is held rigid and not functioning to absorb the horse's weight correctly, then that pressure is referred to further up the structure, creating damage to joints, tendons, and cartilage, resulting in arthritis. Some say that once a horse has arthritis, it cannot be cured. I don't believe this is the case. But it's best to catch it in its earliest stages before too much damage occurs. You should be paying close attention and investigating your horse's bumps, swellings, and quirks to modify or improve conditions and alleviate any disease progress. Even if the horse can't be healed, your horse can live comfortably for years if you understand hoof function and treatment.
Don't Mess with Perfect Engineering

The hoof is perfectly engineered with an innate intelligence to support a horse's weight in movement. When a horse's full weight descends, the hoof is sandwiched between that load and the ground. The hoof spreads apart, allowing the coffin bone to drop like a trampoline - the hoof's natural shock-absorbing feature. The walls spread (up to 6mm from side to side), and the sole draws flat. The frog works to spread the heels apart, pulling the sole flat and inviting the leg's bone structure to descend into the hoof. Shock is absorbed in the hoof capsule, allowing joints to function without extraordinary strain. If the frog cannot make ground contact and function as it should, then shock cannot be correctly absorbed, and blood cannot freely flow.
Circulation
Circulation is imperative to the distribution of oxygen and nutrients throughout the system. Healthy blood flow aids in arthritis prevention and facilitates healing. Limited blood flow leads to degeneration.
Nailing metal onto horses' feet restricts the frog's ground contact, limiting blood circulation. All metal shoes are nailed on when the hoof is in the air, at its smallest, most contracted shape. The hoof is not expanded with weight-bearing, and it is then held firm in this smallest state.
5 Ways to Manage Arthritis Naturally
1.   The first line of defense in bony changes and arthritic conditions is to stop clamping and nailing. An unrestricted hoof will encourage the blood to circulate through the proper channels. The hoof can flex and expand by carrying a host of functional nutrients to allow shock absorption and relieve the strain to the Extensor tendon, joints, and cartilage. Oxygen and nutrients help encourage healthy new growth.

2.   Hoofs require proper trimming, hydration, and adequate movement on appropriate terrain. Trim your horse to allow the horse's structure to descend and the hoof capsule to flex and absorb that weight properly with unrestrained movement, flexion, and pumping action.

3.   Horses move around more when kept in a herd, where social interaction motivates more movement. Their hoofs function when they are moving – expansion and contraction. Horses are happier emotionally too. Keep your horse with at least one other. Vary the terrain. Tend to keep it hard and aggressive to encourage growth and circulation. Cavallo Hoof Boots are an integral part of the rehabilitation process.
They provide comfort, protection, and traction. Cavallo will assist in promoting movement on all terrain.

4.   Adequately hydrated hoofs involve elasticity, which promotes the all-important hoof mechanism. Suppleness also allows for a more effortless trimming procedure, especially in dry weather. Consider your horse's environment and add water or a mud pool in an area your horse must move in. Water is preferred over commercial products as many moisturizers available on the market contain alcohol, solvents and other agents that draw moisture out. As with many authentic solutions, there are often no quick fix shortcuts. You may have to stand with your horse while soaking. Or you can use your Cavallo Hoof Boots. Cover the built-in drainage holes with duct tape and fill the boots with water. Your horse can freely rumble around hydrating his own feet.
5.   Our domestic mounts no longer move with the herd many miles a day foraging for food on their natural environment's hard arid ground while hydrating hoofs in watering holes. Often their movement is limited to an average of 2 or 3 rides per week. Their hoofs are conditioned to their living environment: grassy pastures and bedded stalls. They are prepared to tolerate the terrain of their habitat. But then, for 5% or even a generous 10% of the time, we ask them to pack us up a gravelly trail or hard asphalt road. Their hoofs may not be accustomed to this terrain and are further stressed with an increased load of our weight and our saddles' weight, which is about 200 extra pounds. That's about 20% of their body weight!
Conventional Treatments

Tack store shelves are lined with NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory) and topical cream pain killers. Currently, there are more than 80 oral nutraceutical supplements on the market. Glucosamine may play a role in cartilage repair. Chondroitin sulphate helps cartilage elasticity, and hyaluronan may help lubricate joints.

Corticosteroids can be injected directly into the synovial fluid has been documented to suppress inflammation within a joint.
Hyaluronic acid can be injected directly into the arthritic joints. It may stimulate the body to produce more HA, condensing the synovial fluid and increases its cushioning ability within the joint.
Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) directs a beam of energy waves at the site and can improve a situation.

 Choosing your Direction

In severe cases, where there is no other way to alleviate pain, a surgeon may opt to fuse the joint. Either by chemical, laser, or physical surgery, destroying cartilage to facilitate bone ends growing together into one, immobile structure. When friction is gone, the pain lessens.

You have now read through many options for preventing or alleviating the results of arthritis conditions. It may be a learning process and a challenging circumstance, but it need not be confusing. Whatever you and your veterinarian choose in the right direction, you can always provide your horse with the comfort, protection, and support benefits of Cavallo Hoof Boots! It's that simple.

Hoof Boots for Healing:

"Two years ago, I went from shoes to Cavallo boots for my 23-year-old QH gelding. He has navicular and arthritis, but I wanted to try barefoot. Today he is SOUNDER, and I received one of the best compliments the other day. A fellow rider said: "Hey, you're coming up behind me with your horse and his big dinner plate feet!!!" (He used to have TINY QH shod feet)! Thank you, Cavallo, for EVERYTHING!!!"
