FROM OUR MINISTRY INTERN

Carrie Haas Adams

Hello, GSPC friends! I am excited to serve as your Ministry Intern this summer. One of my projects is “Gifts of Government Street,” a series that will feature interviews with select members who are "pillars" of Government Street Presbyterian Church.

Each interview will be based around the same set of questions. It is our hope that this series will shine light on the meaningful history of GSPC and bring blessings through these personal reflections.

The first installment of the series is below, and features my Grandmother-In-Law, Ann Greer Adams.

I hope you enjoy reading "Gifts of Government Street" this summer. If you have suggestions for the series, please feel free to email me, or call me at the church office.

Grace and Peace,

Carrie

Gifts of Government Street:

Ann Greer Adams

This year, Ann Greer Adams marks 60 years of membership at Government Street Presbyterian Church. She joined the church after marrying Marion Strickler Adams Jr. in 1960, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Ann knew of Ma'on’s dedication to Government Street well before they married. She can recall countless stories he shared with her from his childhood and as a young man at GSPC. It was clear to her that this would be the place she would raise her family and establish roots of her own. Those roots have remained strong, as her great-grandchildren are now a part of the sixth generation to attend Government Street Presbyterian Church.

However, family traditions are not the only reason that Ann has remained a member for all of these years: It was the inviting atmosphere and inspiring leadership that made an impact on her from the start. “The women who taught our Sunday school classes were role models to me," she recalled. "They led lives of such intention and devotion, truly walking by faith. They were incredibly inspiring to me and had an enormous impact on the foundation of my Christianity and love of this church.”

Ann has always enjoyed Sunday School classes and other resources for adult members to expand their Christian education. She cherishes so many aspects of her membership at GSPC, particularly the opportunities to connect her passion for music and her love for the church. She fondly remembers her husband, Ma'on, assisting in the selection of the stunning organ installed in the balcony, and she was inspired when she was invited to perform meaningful duets and solos on the piano during worship.

When asked if there has been a specific time she felt God working through the church, Ann delighted in memories of Government Street’s mission work through “Meals on Wheels” and Coffee Club. “It has been a blessing to witness the impact the church has made for those in need within our community,” she said. She is proud of the way Government Street has served as a faithful pillar for the needy in our area over the years.

One aspect of GSPC that Ann values most, she said, is “the way the church has always welcomed people from all walks of life, no matter what their place is in this world, they are welcome here.”

The most vital lesson Ann has learned as a member of Government Street Presbyterian Church: “God’s ultimate purpose for us is to love one another. He never intended for us to be alone. Government Street has shown me that from my first days as a Presbyterian and it remains even truer today. My church family has meant more to me than anything.”

Ann, affectionately known as “Nanee” to her grandchildren, has so many wonderful memories about GSPC over the years. She shared stories of sitting in the balcony with family and friends; frequent attempts to fight back laughter when Stova McFadden would mumble a joke; hearing lectures from some of the most impressive theologists in the country; Easter Sundays so overcrowded that chairs were pulled into the aisles for extra seating; and the unforeseeable impact of Shelia’s move from the nursery to the kitchen!

The GSPC family is so thankful for Ann's dedication over 60 years, and we pray for God's continued blessings on her and her family.

Opportunities for Service

Please remember the people our church is serving and those who work with them daily in your prayers.

Help for Ukraine

The Presbyterian Disaster Assistance program is our denomination's means for helping in times of disaster and crisis. The PC(USA) is in touch with our partner churches in Ukraine, Russia, Poland and Hungary. While it is difficult to get funds into Ukraine, the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance workers are doing their best to meet needs. In addition, they are sending supplies to partners in Hungary and Poland to help with the mounting refugee crisis in those countries. If you would like to help, you may give online or by text. https://pda.pcusa.org/situation/ukraine/

PB&J for Meals on Wheels

Our 45 Meals on Wheels recipients receive a sack lunch each day, along with a hot meal. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are often on the menu, and donations of creamy peanut butter and grape jelly are needed to help fill the pantry. Our clients also receive an individually wrapped snack, and snack donations are needed: peanut butter/cheese crackers, chips, cookies, cereal bars, Cheez-its, etc. Please leave your Meals on Wheels donations in the donation box at the Jackson Street entrance.

McKemie Place

GSPC has agreed to provide lunch for up to 45 residents at McKemie Place on the second Friday of each month. Thank you to everyone who has volunteered for this mission over the last year. We are in need of volunteers to provide, prepare, and serve lunches on July 14 and August 11. If you can help with this mission on either of these dates, please contact Lisa deShazo at 251-591-1077.

In addition, the residents of McKemie Place are in need of luggage to carry their belongings when they are able to leave the shelter. Please bring your donations of gently used luggage to the church office.

Barton Academy for Advanced World Studies

The Mobile Area Interfaith Conference (MAIC) is a non-profit agency that provides services for inmates in Metro Jail and released inmates returning to the community. This agency was formerly known as the Council of Downtown Churches, of which GSPC was a major participant. MAIC currently has an urgent need for white underwear (see details in the listing below) and used glasses. Below is a list of needed items:

  • Personal hygiene products for men and women, including full size shampoo and conditioner (must be able to see through the containers), full size deodorant (no roller balls), full size soap, full size toothpaste, white cotton socks (no anklet style);

  • Clothing, including men's white cotton briefs or boxers (no snaps), white cotton T-shirts with sleeves (men and women use these, so all sizes welcome), women's white cotton underpants (all sizes), women's white cotton bras (all sizes);

  • Reading material, including Bibles (softbound only, large print editions especially needed), magazines with neutral content such as food, decorating, self-improvement, health, shopping, geography, history, etc., and books (soft bound only, with mild non-violent content, non-fiction also appreciated).

  • Small containers of shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, and soap are also welcome.

If you have any questions about any of these missions, please contact Lisa deShazo, Chair of the Urban Ministries Committee.

Blanket Ministry: All are invited to donate baby blankets to be delivered to the Mostellar Clinic. Inexpensive items of any baby-appropriate washable fabric or yarn are appreciated. The babies we serve usually average 8 lbs. Store-bought or handmade items are welcomed. Donations may be left in the “Baby Box” at the Jackson Street Foyer, or you may order from Amazon and request delivery to the church, marked “Blanket Ministry.”
