St. David's Book Club

St David’s Book Club News

by Cathy Schwichtenberg

The St. David’s Book Club upcoming selection will be discussed on Tuesday, August 1 from 6:30 pm – 7:55 pm.   This month’s book is Little Bee by Chris Clive.

Book clubs in search of the next Kite Runner need look no further than this astonishing, flawless novel about what happens when ordinary, mundane Western lives are thrown into stark contrast against the terrifying realities of war-torn Africa. Their marriage in crisis, Andrew and Sarah O'Rourke impulsively accept a junket to a Nigerian beach resort as a last-ditch attempt to reconcile. When machete-wielding soldiers appear out of the jungle and force them to determine the fate of two African girls, everyone's lives are irrevocably shattered. Two years later in a London suburb, one of the girls, now a refugee, reconnects with Sarah. Together they face wrenching tests of a friendship forged under extreme duress. Best-selling author Cleave (Incendiary) effortlessly moves between alternating viewpoints with lucid, poignant prose and the occasional lighter note. A tension-filled dramatic ending and plenty of moral dilemmas add up to a satisfying, emotional read. Highly recommended for all libraries and book clubs.  ~Hclib.org

Reflections from the Pride Parade

I was in the parade last Sunday and we had great weather, and great people. Overall a wonderful experience! The weather was always changing, we had rain, sun, clouds, wind almost everything except for snow. I feel like that was God's way of showing he accepts everyone, and understands how some people go through changes. It was a special experience, and I really felt God's presence in the moment.

-Emery N.

The Pride parade was a fantastic experience for everyone involved, whether you’re an ally supporting or part of the community. The energy of the crowds and the people in the parade were amazing. I could not stop smiling because of how happy everyone was to be there. As you walked around the corner to start the parade, the amount of excitement multiplied. Then coming out of the parade and going into the park with the vendors and the large amounts of people was another wondrous part of the experience. Everyone was happy to be there and everyone was so welcoming. I am so glad that Saint Davids's participated. Overall it was such an amazing experience with lots of high energy and fun and I can not wait till next year to go again.

-Gavin F.

ICA Update

This Sunday, July 2, is ICA Sunday

Have you seen the Scissors, Rock, Paper! Posters at the church entrances? That is the theme for the July ICA intake, which will be this Sunday, July 2. What ICA needs this month includes:

  • Paper towels
  • Kleenex
  • Toilet paper
  • Napkins

Of course, these are just suggestions. Anything you want to donate is always most welcome. If you will be away for the holiday weekend, feel free to drop off your items in one of the ICA baskets provided at the church entrances at your convenience.

If you prefer, a cash donation is always appreciated. ICA’s access to products and programs is able to stretch your cash donation. You can drop a check made out to ICA in the Sunday collection plate or donate online using the QR code on the ICA poster at each entrance or at www.icafoodshelf.org, clicking on the Donate section.  Many thanks for continuing to support ICA.

Gardening for a Good Cause

As your gardens are starting to grow now, keep ICA and our neighbors in need in mind. Many of the families who use ICA services don’t have access to fresh produce. And while ICA is able to purchase some items, rising costs mean it still relies heavily on homegrown donations throughout the summer.

Please consider sharing some of your harvest and support local families.  Home-grown produce is an incredible joy to share. ICA accepts any size donation, whether a handful of cherry tomatoes or a bushel of apples.  All sorts of vegetables, herbs and fruits are welcome.

2023 Postal Drive a Success!

Did you know the annual Letter Carriers’ Food Drive is the largest one-day drive in the entire nation? Spanning over 10,000 cities and towns across the nation, people all over are encouraged to leave a bag of nonperishable food by their mailbox on the second Saturday in May. For ICA, this drive plays a major role in ensuring we have a sufficient enough stockpile of food to last through the summer months.  This year over 27,000 pounds of food was donated to ICA as part of the event. Thank you for helping to make this year’s Drive such a success!

To add someone to the prayers, please contact the office: office@stdavidsparish.org

We will include all individuals in the prayers list for four consecutive weeks, and then they will be removed from the list. If the prayer need is ongoing, please reach out and we will keep their names on the list. If anyone's prayer need is shorter than four weeks, please also note that. This way we will keep all prayer lists updated and recent.
