MRTP Graduates in the Classroom

Eighteen teachers in the Montana Rural Teacher Project (MRTP) earned their Master of Arts in Teaching degree in May. Nearly all of these newly minted educators are hard at work and settling into teaching positions this fall. In addition, twenty-six teachers from the first two cohorts of MRTP are continuing into their second and third years of teaching.

The 47 graduates from all three cohorts teach everything from kindergarten to high school English, math, science, and history. The map pictured above shows the location of all MRTP graduates.

Sense-Sational STEAM

For the past three summers the Inclusive Community Camp (ICC) has provided local children with and without disabilities an active, STEAM-focused camp experience. It also offers MSU teacher candidates the experience of working with children of different abilities in a fun setting. This year's theme, Sense-sational STEAM, focused on how we use sensors in our daily lives. Camp goers participated in exciting activities with coding, motion sensors, and even created their own tie-dye shirts.

Both graduate teacher education students (studying in the online MAT program) and undergraduate students studying special education/human development engaged in this collaborative experience serving as camp mentors.

Master of Arts in Teaching

The MRTP has funded its third and final cohort, however the MAT program will continue to provide several pathways for new educators who want to enter the profession, including Class V licensure.

The MAT is offered online, with the exception of one, seven-day summer residency on the MSU-Bozeman campus. This allows educators to remain in their communities. Coursework can be completed in as little as one year or spread over a three-year period depending on the cohort availability, consistent with Class V licensure requirements.
