Here are three ways that you can celebrate Valentine's Day with your families and loved ones!

  • Have an outdoor picnic!
  • Enjoy some nice sandwiches and chocolate-covered strawberries with the special people in your life!

  • Pick some flowers and fruits.
  • There's nothing sweeter than enjoying freshly picked apples with your loved ones!

  • Enjoy a lazy day!
  • When all else fails, enjoy a nice relaxing day with your friends, family, and valentines!

Happy Black History Month!
Black History Month is a historical month to observe African-American history and to recognize black historical figures such as...

  • Maya Angelou
  • An American poet, and civil rights activist. Some of her published works include "We Had Him", "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings", and "And Still I Rise".
  • Muhammad Ali
  • An American boxer who not only battled racial injustices but also paved the way for boxers everywhere. Some of his accomplishments include winning an Olympic gold medal and holding 3 world heavyweight championship titles.
  • James Baldwin
  • An American playwright who confronted racism and described his experience as a black man through his plays. Some of his published works include "The Amen Corner", "The Fire Next Time", and "Notes of a Native Son".
  • Mary Mcleod Bethune
  • An educator and civil rights activist who started the National Council of Negro Women and opened her very own historically black college/university (HBCU) entitled Bethune-Cookman University (which is located in Daytona Florida).

Encourage your students to learn more about black historical figures, though our FAU hosted events this month!

During the month of February, FAU celebrates bodies of every shape and size! Body Image is comprised of our thoughts, perceptions, and attitudes about our bodies. Having a positive or negative body image can affect our mental and physical health. Modeling positive body image, where we see ourselves as we are and accept our bodies, can be a great influence on our students.

Try these steps to model better body image for your student:

Encourage critical thinking: What we see in the media may not always be true. Often, companies are trying to sell a product by making us feel insecure about ourselves. Recognizing this and speaking out about it are important steps. Try following positive influences on social media.

Demonstrate a healthy relationship with food and
exercise:

We all need to eat and move in order to enjoy our bodies. Dieting and exercising to lose weight can harm the relationship we have with our bodies and diminish our own body image. Eating and moving mindfully are great ways to improve our own relationships with these.

Build Self-esteem: Setting goals and achieving them helps us to build our own self-esteem. Encourage your student to strive for their goals and support them along the way. Showing your student that they are loved and supported will have a positive impact in times of higher stress.

Encourage your student to sign up for The Body Project, rated a model program for efficacy in improving body satisfaction and reducing the likelihood of eating disorders by BluePrints for Healthy Youth Development.

Students can also check out a full schedule of body-positive events during the month of February at the link above.

Spring 2021 can be the best semester for your students at FAU!

The FAU Academic Calendar has important dates to be aware of for Spring 2021: https://www.fau.edu/registrar/registration/calendar.php#spring.

Here are a few action steps that you may use to help your students accomplish greatness this semester!

  • Please encourage them to set goals for this academic year. The goals can be in the classroom involving their academics or outside of their classes. Here are a few examples:

  • In classes/academic goals – goals that they want to earn as final grades for semester courses
  • Earning a specific GPA by the end of this semester
  • Meeting with an academic advisor early this semester (related websites: https://www.fau.edu/uas/ and https://www.fau.edu/advising/)

  • Please ask your students to map out their semester schedule with the particular days and times of class meetings and the days and times that they will work on their classes. These are important steps for students to follow in order to develop an appropriate time management and study schedule. It can be done at the beginning of each semester.

  • Students can make an appointment with a PEER ACADEMIC COACH to get detailed help on how to develop a time management and study schedule, along with other academic skills that can help them be successful this semester. https://fau.edu/academicsuccess/peer-academic-coaching/
