Keep Our Roads Safe:
Maintain Proper Rainwater Drainage

With rain can come issues. To avoid flooding your property and common areas, ORCA asks our residents to please maintain proper water runoff.

Throughout Ocean Reef, our roads are pitched higher in the middle so water can drain off the pavement into the right-of-way. The right-of-way is the five feet of land on each side of the road. ORCA typically owns these common areas and uses the space to collect rainwater so that the roads dry quickly. This type of drainage system also allows the rainwater to percolate through our porous rock slowly, cleansing the water before entering our groundwater system.

For this drainage system to work, each homeowner is required to maintain a swale (a small ditch) next to the road in front of their property to receive the rainwater. While this land depression should be along all routes, over time landscape often fills in the swale hindering runoff and resulting in unsafe puddling on our streets.

We realize puddles are not always avoidable, but the goal is to make sure the water does not stay on a road for more than a couple of hours. To keep roads clear of standing water, it is imperative that homeowners maintain their drainage swales.

ORCA asks all residents to check their property's swale, and if necessary, please make adjustments to your landscape. We appreciate your help in maintaining proper drainage on your property to keep travel on our roads safe. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact ORCA's Director of Public Works Lesli Wojtecki at 305-367-7321or lwojtecki@orcareef.com.
