|
Lisa Reed has enjoyed the creative spirit since she was a small child. After a catastrophic event that affected her eyesight and
turned her world upside down
, she "saw" life even more clearly. Reed works with the luscious media of Cold Wax painting, creating what she calls "SoulScapes".
Reed is represented by galleries in Dallas, Santa Fe, Farmington, NM, Crested Butte, CO, and Watkins Glenn, N.Y. and you can learn even more about her by exploring her website at

Lisa Reed's statement:
"I have very secretly seen myself as an artist since I was a small child. I always knew my creativity would dominate my life and in this final third I am all in! Although it's been quite the leap to go from being an executive for a Fortune 200 company to the world of art, I have never once looked back.
I was blessed by a stroke that left me blind in one eye a few years ago. Funny how it made me see things differently and have an even greater desire to paint the world from this unique perspective.
I discovered my favorite juicy medium when I first opened a jar of cold wax and mixed it with oil. It was like painting with yummy canned frosting! The many layers that I apply, then intuitively scrape away, always reveals beautiful surprises underneath. So much like life.
The stuff that we may have layered on and covered up make us the unique individuals that we are. If we dare peel some layers away, our colorful gifts are there in all their glory. My paintings are SoulScapes."

David Blow: I am photographer/printmaker and Professor Emeritus of Art at the University of North Texas. I have been engaged as a
printmaker for forty five years and
exhibited my work in numerous national and international exhibitions including 2014 "All Creatures of our God and King" a one person exhibition at Lovers Lane UMC in Dallas,
Texas. In 2013, I had a "Retrospective Exhibition" at the University of North Texas on the Square in Denton. For more information, check davidblow.net
Susan K. Boyle has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Arizona State University. After graduation she worked as a commercial artist for several years in Kansas City and in New York City. After changing careers Boyle continued studying art while traveling worldwide. Susan says, "Art is my primary creative outlet, so drawing and painting people has always seemed particularly compelling to me."
Boyle has been exhibiting publicly for over seventeen years. Her work may be seen in private collections across America.
About this Art Series:
This series of ten paintings started with models in the studio. Working from life, Susan K Boyle created sensitive line drawings that she enlarged and transferred to canvas. Boyle's goal was to capture the mood and spirit of the individual with a minimum of lines, marks, and colors. Using simplified forms, and limited colors she created this series of thoughtful figurative work of art. Website: susanboyle.com.
Born in Houston in 1966,
Deanna Wood spent most of her childhood moving around the country with her family, returning to Texas in 1982.
She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Arts in graphic design, both from Texas Woman's University. She worked as a graphic designer in a corporate environment for 14 years. She decided to leave the corporate world behind to pursue a career in fine art, receiving a Master of Fine Arts in painting from Texas Woman's University in 2004. She lives in Denton, Texas and teaches art at Texas Woman's University and encaustic workshops at her studio and The Encaustic Center.

Isabel Cano's Statement: "I create art to share with the viewer a slice of what and how, I perceive my surroundings.
My series 'Flowers' is a study of shape, color, light and shadow.
I create these paintings to give the flowers a much longer life, in hopes that more people will get to see the ones that captivated me. The purpose of the bigger scale is to create an impact that will force as many viewers as possible, to see the beauty that would otherwise go unnoticed."

"Through the Ages"
exhibition at the Denton Senior Center
Tom Judd will be
exhibiting January through March.
Denton, TX photographer, Thomas Judd, has been making photographs for over 35 years. What began as a hobby in the late 1960's eventually turned into a career. Growing up in the Hudson Valley region of New York State, Judd learned to develop film and make black and white prints with his dad in a home darkroom. After the family relocated a couple of times, Judd found himself in the Chicago area for his last year and a half of high school where he worked for both the school newspaper and yearbook as a staff photographer.
Thomas Judd earned a B.A. degree in Cinema and Photography from Southern Illinois University in 1980 and has made a career as a working photographer ever since. Experienced in many areas of commercial photography, as well as having taught beginning photography mini-courses at the University of North Texas, Judd has always kept a place in his life for making photographs that are purely for artistic enjoyment. His fine art photographs are widely exhibited, have won numerous awards, and are held in private collections throughout the United States.

Darla Bostick
has 11 pieces at Tierney's Tavern and Restaurant on Main St., in Lewisville, TX from
Jan. 8 - Feb. 26.
She also has 3 pieces in the "Artrageous Art" show with Visual Arts of Lewisville through the end of the month.
Bostick's
artwork was selected to appear in the 30th Anniversary Edition 2017 Cheap Joe's Art Stuff Reference Catalog. My "Warriors of Xian, China" was also chosen for the
22nd Arts in Harmony International Juried Exhibition February through March at the City Hall of Blain, MN.
"Sweet Dream" by Darla Bostick was juried into the national show, Gimme Shelter. It is hosted by Ciel Gallery: A Fine Art Collective, 128 E Park Avenue, Charlotte, North Carolina. The show will be taking donations to benefit the Humane Society Wish List.

Hecho en Dallas
exhibition is designed to showcase the recent work of professional artists who reside and are active in the artistic environment of the Dallas area. The exhibition was conceived by the Latino Cultural Center in recognition of the talented pool of artists whose creative endeavors give vitality to the cultural movement in DFW. Hecho en Dallas is a component of ART 214, a joint collaboration between the City of Dallas' Office of Cultural Affairs cultural centers and facilities in celebration of Dallas Arts Month 2017.

Center for Contemporary Printmaking: 11th Biennial International Miniature Print Competition 2017

ABOUT THE COMPETITION:
The Center for Contemporary Printmaking is delighted to announce the 11th Biennial International Miniature Print Competition and Exhibition. This juried competition and exhibition, limited to works that are no more than four square inches (25.8 square cm), encourages artists to explore the miniature print format and provides them with an opportunity for exhibition. It is also an opportunity for artists and the public to view the current concerns of printmakers from around the world. Since its inception in 1997, the competition has attracted entries by more than 1500 artists from around the world and across the U.S.A.
The International Miniature Print Competition is held every other year, alternating with CCP's other biennial, FootPrint International (for prints measuring 12 x 12 in. exactly).

Irving Art Association invites artists to participate in the Indian Folk Art exhibition, a celebration of Indian culture and heritage. The open call exhibition is an opportunity to expose and feature mid-career and emerging artists from around the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex whose submitted works relate to themes around Indian culture and heritage. Indian paintings have a very long tradition and history in Indian art. VAST Artist Day Out is a day where members may come paint at the Arts Center from 9:00am - 3pm, approximately two mornings a month. There is no instructor, it is not a workshop...just an art gathering.
You may paint, sketch, quilt or what ever creative endeavor you desire in the fellowship with your artist friends. Lunch and fellowship are the best parts!

These are the dates (usually fourth Thursday) for the monthly drawing session with a live model. This two hour open studio at the Arts Center will have no instructor. The group is available to VAST members only.
Each meeting will have both short and long poses. The model will be clothed. Participants will share the cost of the model. All participants will be responsible for putting the room back in order.
There will be no meetings in the summer: June, July, and August.
Location: The craft room at the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center, 400 East Hickory Street.
Because studio space is limited, it will be necessary for interested artists to reserve a space. If you have not yet reserved your space, please contact Susan Boyle at:
