USA TODAY: "THE SS UNITED STATES' CURRENT STEWARDS...HAVE BOLD PLANS FOR THE SHIP."

Conservancy President Discusses the Future of America's Flagship

In a wide-ranging feature that appeared in USA Today, SS United States Conservancy President Susan Gibbs spoke about her passion for America's Flagship, the Conservancy's ongoing work, and the nonprofit organization's vision for a bright future for this beloved symbol of American accomplishment an innovation. The print story was accompanied by a video interview available HERE.

Speaking with reporters and supporters on the ship's flybridge, Gibbs emphasized the deep historic importance of the vessel. “There is no other American ocean liner left. She was the greatest ship in her day, and she remains so now. And it's just so important to preserve our history as a nation,” Gibbs said.

The article went on to address the ship's current pier dispute, noting that the nonprofit SS United States Conservancy has argued "in court filings that they’re model tenants who’d dutifully paid… and that their lease with Penn Warehousing had no provisions for sudden and unilateral rent hikes — certainly not with two weeks notice during a pandemic." As noted on the FAQ page of our website, "The Conservancy has always taken its financial obligations and responsibilities seriously and has continued to pay rent to Penn Warehousing at the agreed upon rate reflected in the berthing agreement for the ship. We will continue to do so while attempting to resolve the dispute." The Conservancy also continues to search for alternative, safe, and viable locations for the vessel.

Gibbs also discussed the SS United States' redevelopment prospects, noting that the Conservancy's partnership with RXR Realty continues to advance. The shared vision is a mixed-use, permanently docked, dynamic attraction, including a hotel, event spaces, unique restaurants and retail, and an exciting and inspiring museum and innovation center. The article concludes, “Though delayed by the pandemic, these ambitious development plans are now again making 'significant progress,' …What they need is a little more time."

The Conservancy remains grateful for the vision, investment, and support of RXR’s experienced staff, architects, and engineers. We also thank our steadfast and generous members and donors who have not "given up the ship" and continue to support our vision and ongoing work. Together, we will Save the SS United States!

The Conservancy is excited to introduce our newest team member Rebecca (Becky) Haggerty Williams! As our Development Associate, Becky will be playing a leading role in supporting the Conservancy’s mission by engaging with supporters and building our network of donors.

Becky recently shared, "I first learned of the SS United States when I moved to the greater Philadelphia area and went to the IKEA near the ship’s pier with my daughter. I thought, 'What is that massive ship?' At the time, I didn’t realize what a treasure was before me."

WONDERFUL MEMORIES OF A GREAT SHIP

"The epitome of American technology power and graciousness..." That's what comes to mind for Dr. Harold J. Goldfarb when he thinks about the SS United States.

In May 1964, Dr. Goldfarb served as ship's surgeon, treating crew and passengers on transatlantic crossings between New York and Le Havre. Returning to America's Flagship in May 2023, Dr. Goldfarb recounted some of the perks of his position - including the extraordinary treatment afforded to him by the crew members whose care he was entrusted with - and the thanks he received from one grateful passenger.
