April Presentation: Wednesday, 6:45 pm
Vision News and Updates                           April 4, 2018

April Guest Artist: Angelia Ford
VAST Artist Talk:  Wednesday, April 4,   6:45-9pm

Our presenter is  Angelia Ford, Dallas-based Multimedia Artist

Ange's thoughts:
"As an artist, I have always been motivated to create work with the intention of peeling away the outside layers of our human experience, in order to reveal who  we are at our core. The true beauty of art is its capability to stir emotion in the viewer and remind us of all that we have in common. In that respect, I feel it is my duty to create work that inspires personal reflection, which in turn invites the viewer to entertain a new perspective on the world around them.

The series of drawings titled "Creating Visibility for the Invisible" explores the dynamics of homelessness, and reveals the paths and circumstances that led to their subjects' displacement. The drawings reflect upon the homeless individuals' isolation, while examining the common misconceptions to focus on the longstanding chasm between the homeless and their surrounding communities.
I talk to each individual for three to four hours in an effort to understand the reasons they became homeless. As references for my drawings, I take between fifteen to twenty photographs. The latitude and longitude of the location where I spoke to them is added to the drawing as a geographical point for the viewer. This is their home.

My work reveals the barriers that have been created by stereotypes, and considers the homeless population from a different perspective. In re-evaluating their plight through art, I recognize the homeless and nurture the hope that they will no longer be ignored. Instead, they are seen as people who are doing the best they can to survive. They are people who have a story, if only we would take time to listen."

Meetings are held at the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center,
400 East Hickory St, Denton, TX.
Next Meeting: May 2 , 2018 , 6:45 - 9:00 pm

"Outside the Box" exhibition at POINTBank Black Box Theater
Lisa Daniels will have work displayed starting March 15 - June 15.

Lisa Daniels will be exhibiting a selection of watercolor and mixed media paintings with her primary theme of auto art.

Daniels has been creating auto art since before she could drive. "I grew up around cars, and their contours, colors, and craftsmanship always fascinated me." Her media include pencil, acrylic, and watercolor on canvas or metal backgrounds.

Daniels partnered with a classic and exotic car restoration business until 1993, when she decided art was her full-time calling. Since then, her work has graced numerous publications and events. A run of 13 prints for the Rolls Royce

Owners Club Stores are highly prized collectibles. When she's not working in her impeccably tidy North Texas home studio, lined with autographed pictures of Mario Andretti, Graham Hill, and Jim Clark, as well as her own work, she's caring for four rescue cats, actively participating in four car clubs and two boat clubs, watching F1 and Le Mans racing or listening to blues on KNON.

Her latest endeavor is exploring abstract and collage techniques. Daniels states, "As long as I can hold a paintbrush and a wrench, I'll keep trying new things. It's better to keep busy and active than rust."

"Through the Ages" exhibition at the Denton Senior Center
Shubha Mantri will be showing through April.

Shubhangi Mantri is a freelance artist based in Denton, Texas.  She has a degree in Interior Design and began her study in oil painting. After raising two children, Shubha pursued her art again.  Artist Jo Williams, Leo Smith and Jane Jones introduced and motivated her towards the medium of watercolor. Currently she works from her studio at home.

Mantri has had the opportunity to attend workshops with national artists such as Katherine Chang Lui, Fran Larson, Alex Powers, Doug Walton, Don Andrews, Stephen Quiller and Christopher Schnick.

Her paintings have focused on various themes such as flowers, landscapes, buildings and clay pots. She has used her artistic imagination by painting the blueprints of houses. She transforms the blueprint of the front elevation of the house into watercolor. Presently she has taken a liking to the gestures of the Indian classical and folk dance. Shubha feels that to pursue any dream, one has to give it time and perseverance.  "For me, this entire experience has been very involving. On the one hand painting keeps me thinking of the principles and elements of design and on the other it is a highly intuitive and personal experience. After completing a painting, I feel that this is my way of looking at the world, my unique perspective. Nothing gives me more satisfaction than critiquing my own work."

Coordinator for exhibit: Isabel Cano, isabelcano@verizon.net.
The Denton Senior Center is located at  509 N. Bell Ave., Denton, TX
Hours: M-F 8:00 am to 9:00 pm; Saturday 9:00 am to 1:00 pm

"Stoked About Denton" Exhibition,
walking distance from the PAAC at 608 E. Hickory St., Suite 128
Artist for the Stoked About Denton Exhibition is Kimberley Dietrich starting February 5.

Artist Carol Stoecker:
"Art has come in many shapes and sizes in my lifetime.  After earning a Bachelor of Art Degree in Fashion Design with a Minor in Fashion Illustration, I have worked several very creative jobs, from District Home Economist, Pattern Maker, Clothing Designer, Fashion Illustrator, Floral Designer to full time Artist.  I have also volunteered in the Destination Imagination program (creative problem solving) to share some of my creative techniques with children.

In 1999, I expanded my creative career by starting my own business painting murals and faux finishes in hundreds of model and residential homes as well as restaurants. Because my business has grown I have become a full time artist and have experienced many types of paints through my murals, fine art, pet portraits, heirloom paintings and glass painting.

What I like most about my job is the variety of people I get to
know!  I continue to be inspired by the things that create an emotional connection between each client and the pieces I  create for them."

Carol Stoecker is the coordinator for this exhibition. If you are interested in showing, please contact her at storytimeartist@yahoo.com.

VADO - VAST Artist Day Out

VADO is our name for Vast Artist Day Out; it's held the first and third Thursday of each month except November and December. VADO has undergone changes this year, but is still a great opportunity to get to know other members and enjoy the fellowship of other artists.  We meet the first Thursday at the Beulah Center at 7801 S-I35 E, Global  Spheres in Corinth and the third Thursday at PAAC (Patterson-Appleton Arts Center.) The time is from 10 A.M. until 1 P.M.  We bring something to work on and/or to share with our VADO friends.  It is not a teaching situation, but we all learn from each other!

We will begin a new year in June, and the fee is unknown at this time.  We need to know how many want to enjoy this time with us in the coming VAST year before we know how much the fee will be.  We now have to pay GDAC for our meeting at the PAAC, and the more members we have, the less each will have to pay. The more, the merrier....and the cheaper!

Please email me, Fran Shurtleff, at fmrws@centurytel.net to let me know if you wish to come to VADO in our coming year - or if you have any questions.  It will not be a firm commitment on your part until you agree to pay the fee we set.

And, yes, lunch out together after VADO is always a great treat!

Life Drawing Group
VAST's monthly drawing session with a live model continues into 2018. This two hour open studio gives members the opportunity to practice drawing people. All current VAST members are invited to attend.

There are no studio fees, however participants will share the cost of the model. Each individual will be responsible for cleaning up after themselves, as needed.

Group meeting day: fourth Thursday of the month
Time: 10 AM to 12 Noon
2018 Dates: 4/26, 5/24.
Location: The meeting will be held in the Beulah Center at Global Spheres Center in Corinth.  Address: 7801 S-I35 E, Corinth, TX 76210.
