Memorial of St. Angela Merici
|
|
"Today the Church raises up for our prayer and pondering the life and legacy of St. Angela Merici, foundress of the Ursulines and a visionary in responding to new ways for women to live a Christian life in the world.
Born in 1474 in a small town in northern Italy, Angela was orphaned at age ten and soon thereafter lost a beloved sister. She had a lifelong openness to the needs of children, and even in her youth, moved by the poverty and ignorance of her neighbors, began providing small classes in religious education for their children. Gradually other women were drawn to this work and the radical model of religious life Angela offered -- an alternative to marriage or the enclosure of the convent, living a consecrated life embedded in the family life of the community. They chose as their patron St. Ursula, a legendary fourth-century martyr who was popularly venerated as a protector of women, and dedicated their mission to the education of poor girls. Angela died on this date in 1540 after a long illness. Four years later Rome approved a constitution for her religious order, which in time came to number tens of thousands of women. She was canonized in 1807." -- Linda Baratte, PhD.

We are fully into our Spring Season and have already hosted a couple of our most established retreat groups. This coming weekend, we will welcome the Fr. Storck group. Omicron has meant that the numbers have not matched those of pre-Covid years, but with the variant abating – at least in our neck of the woods – I hope that more and more people will feel comfortable “coming home” to Loyola Jesuit Center.
By early next week, we plan on launching our revised website. [www.loyola.org] Our goal is to make it easier to use, simpler to find events and more convenient for you to book online. Please visit the new site and let us know what you think.
Our volunteer archivist, Kat Kurylko, keeps bringing forgotten parts of our heritage to light. Recently, she showed me a long article in a 1970s Loyola newsletter about our sacristy. [Can you imagine a detailed article about the room where we keep vestments?] I ended up taking her to the sacristy so that she could see it and find for herself the stained-glass window of St. Anthony that is ‘hidden’ inside. The article mentioned the sacristy having been bricked off from the chapel but, as we examined edging of the floors in St. Katherine’s Chapel and sacristy, it was clear that nothing had been altered from the original floorplan. So, what was bricked off? The mystery deepens…
I keep telling you how grateful I am because I continue to be humbled and astonished by your generosity. We have closed out our Christmas/Winter Appeal and I am thrilled that the amount raised exceeded my fondest hopes. You are amazing. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways
submit to him, and he will make your paths straight”
Proverbs 3:5-6
The Scriptures do not offer us certitude but rather a different way of knowing: an intimate relationship where we must discover that grace, love, mercy and forgiveness necessary for survival-in an always uncertain world. Live this way and you will not be easily defeated.
Isaiah 42:3
This Day of Prayer is being offered on-site and virtually.
(9:30am – 3:00pm) Includes Lunch, Reconciliation and Mass

Please join us on this exciting adventure of faith and discovery. On this weekend, instead of the traditional silent retreat format, we will use a format that encourages engagement and community building by integrating conversation at meals and in various group settings, but also allows for plenty of time for silent reflection and personal prayer.

Our weekend retreat will help us understand this new landscape in mind and heart with a particular emphasis on accompanying men in the joys and struggles they face to understand the Word of God in our contemporary circumstances and to deepen our call to be co-laborers with Christ for the salvation of this world during our unique time in history.

What is a friend? — a friend in the Lord? – a friend with the Lord?
As part of his tender farewell recorded for us in the Gospel of John, Jesus offered his disciples a vision of friendship as a deeply holy practice, a living out of a life of love that mirrors the very heart of the Trinity. Both Ignatius and Francis Xavier embodied this understanding in their commitment to the Spiritual Exercises — a way of encountering God as a God of affection and companionship, our friend — and in their own personal friendship, where that divine love for us was made more credible.
What might this invitation to holy friendship mean in the age of social media, where the answer to “Will you friend me?” is only a click away, and where we are free to be anyone we pretend to be? During our retreat, we will explore models of friendship from Scripture and our Catholic and Jesuit heritage, plus witnesses of holy friendships in contemporary times. We will leave with a deeper gratitude for the God-given, holy friendships in our lives — a love in the particular.
For those who wish, there will be time for shared conversation after our presentations and at meal times. Although we won’t follow the traditional weekend retreat format this weekend, there will be ample opportunity for personal time spent in meditation and prayer, walking in our beautiful gardens, participating in the sacrament of Reconciliation and a healing Mass, and sharing in the Sunday Mass together.
Bring a friend or make a new one!
