ASTEC Middle School’s “6th Grader for a Day” will be Monday, March 8, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This event helps scholars with the transition from 5th to 6th grade by removing the “fear of the unknown.” Each scholar will begin the day at 9:00 a.m. where they will learn about their teachers and do a fun activity with each one. A grab and go breakfast will be available.
Scholars will attend an assembly with no more than 40 children in the auditorium, socially distanced and wearing masks (Lunch will be served between assemblies), Scholars will load the ASTEC bus either before or after lunch, depending on which group they are assigned, and will go to the gym to learn about athletics available to them as well have some physical activity. We didn’t want to leave out a “recess” time!
At the assembly, school leaders will discuss what it is like to be an ASTEC Comet! Scholars will learn about the middle school driveline, what it’s like to have 7 classes and 7 teachers a day, the grading system, and using an agenda and Trapper Keeper.
Future ASTEC 6th graders will learn about problem-solving, making/choosing friends, how lunch works, recess, and student clubs available to join. Our student council leaders will lead a fun activity and award prizes.
Scholars should be picked up at 3 p.m. through our middle school driveline. To access the driveline, enter Shepherd Center off of 23rd by using N. Flynn Ave. by KFC, as one would to go to Wal-Mart. Circle around the busses to the middle school entrance. You will be greeted by teachers to show you the way. (see map link below)
Feel free to call the middle school office if you have any questions: 405-947-6272. Permission slips were handed to each scholar at the elementary school. Scholars should bring their signed permission slip with them when they come to the middle school for the day in order to be allowed to participate.

PROCEDURES TO FOLLOW WHILE ON CAMPUS
|
|
ASTEC has a small number of programs ongoing during our distance/virtual learning days. While scholar expectations for on-campus behavior have not changed they are listed here as a reminder.
-
Uniforms - Scholars must be in full uniform per dress code standards, including wearing a cloth mask.
-
Bring Computer - They should bring their school-issued computer or their home computer. We do not have enough computers on-hand to accommodate everyone.
-
Pick up and Drop off - Parents need to drop off and pick up scholars using the middle school and high school drivelines. (see driveline map link below)
-
COVID-19 Protocols - Handwashing, mask wearing, social distancing, and following the arrows are still expected.

ASTEC FUTURE CITIES ENTRY WINS 3RD!
|
|
ASTEC’s middle school Future City Engineering Team won third place for the third year in a row at the virtual Oklahoma Regional Engineering Competition on Saturday, February 20.
The theme was "Living On the Moon." Requirements included a 1500-word essay, a design/project plan, video, and slide presentation of the model city. Team members include 8th graders - Caden Blackmon-Williams and Ashley Lopez,-Ortiz, and 7th grader Cinthya Ortiz-Solval.
Future City is a flexible, cross-curricular educational program that gives scholars an opportunity to do the things that engineers do. The competitors use the engineering design process which includes identifying problems, brainstorming ideas, designing solutions, testing, retesting and building, and sharing their results.
We are so very proud of our Future City team and their coaches: Ms. Karen Walker, Ms. Karissa Pacione, and Mr. Chris Schat.
