Recharge This Summer … and Get Ready for WVOC in February 2022 in Snowmass, Colorado!
Dear VOS Family,

Hope everyone is doing well and enjoying the summer thus far! As we gradually continue our journey to return to some form of “normal,” we are welcoming clients back to our hospitals and clinics and once again being able to spend face-to-face time with friends and family. With these changes, things can feel more hectic than ever, as work is crazy busy and a lot of us are also facing a decrease in the number of support staff. For this reason, I ask you to remember to take time to take care of yourself and your family. We as veterinarians know too well how we constantly put everyone’s needs ahead of our own, something which I think can be seen as an admirable trait of those in the veterinary profession, but one that can and does take a toll, both mentally, emotionally and physically. So, this summer, after spending a year plus in a once-in-a-lifetime (hopefully!) pandemic, please take time away from work for yourself and your family. Go take a hike, bike, paddle, surf, work in the garden, do whatever brings you joy — but leave the hospital, turn off that phone and recharge. I really hope you all do! 😊
Farshid Guilak, PhD
In this newsletter you will have the opportunity to “meet” our Jacques Jenny lecturer for the upcoming 2022 World Veterinary Orthopaedic Congress (February, 5-12, 2022, Snowmass, Colorado), Dr. Farshid Guilak. Dr. Guilak is a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Washington University, Director of Research for the St. Louis Shriners Hospitals for Children, and co-director of the Washington University Center of Regenerative Medicine. His laboratory is pursuing a multidisciplinary approach for developing new tissue engineering and stem cell-based therapies for musculoskeletal diseases, focusing on primarily on post-traumatic osteoarthritis, obesity-induced osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. We are extremely honored to have him with us next February and can’t wait to listen to his lectures!
WVOC logo
Talking about the WVOC, as you all know for the past few months, your board and the organizing committee, led by Dr. Kurt Schulz and Dr. Laura Peycke, have been working tirelessly putting together what I am certain will be an amazing conference next year. We are excited about the way the program, laboratories and social activities are coming together, and I am hopeful you will all love it. For next year, in addition to our state-of-the-art orthopedic lectures, we are adding other topics to our conference such as economics, diversity, ethics and global perspective on veterinary orthopedics, all which should spark a good level of discussion and new knowledge. We are very hopeful that this upcoming meeting will be a meeting like no other that you have attended in the past for which we are most excited!

Enjoy the summer, stay safe and healthy, and on behalf of the VOS Board, thank you wholeheartedly for being part of this truly amazing society. A big virtual hug to all of you!

Sincerely,
