Dear WKU Community,
At WKU, we have affirmed our commitment to do more to ensure we live in a world that is fair, just, and equitable for all. That commitment requires us to look inward and to engage in important conversations about how we will affect positive change.
The symbols we select and the names we use as a university should communicate our values, honor individuals for exemplary service, and recognize philanthropic investment. In many ways, the names we carve into our buildings and attach to our academic units should define for members of our community the best of what we have been, what we are, and what we aspire to be. Those names and symbols should reflect not only our past but also give hope and promise of fulfilling our mission as a major university for the 21st century.
President Timothy C. Caboni established the Presidential Task Force on Naming and Symbols in fall 2020 to conduct a thorough examination of the history of WKU’s namings; explore options for how we might address those that might be problematic; and make recommendations for university leadership to consider. We have begun the process of researching those names and symbols used on our campuses, the context which led to their adoption, and how they fit within the University’s educational mission.
To consider broader input, the Task Force invites comments and perspectives from a wide range of constituencies and stakeholders. We have published a website, https://www.wku.edu/naming-and-symbols/, where you can review our charge and membership and also provide your input. Your thoughts are important as we seek to provide thoughtful and comprehensive recommendations that can provide guidance now and in the future.
