I wanted to write to you about Sam, my husband. He always is complaining that he has a dry mouth. It seems pretty uncomfortable for him. Any information you could provide to me would be appreciated. I read your newsletter all the time and so does Sam. Thank you.

Dear Laurie,
As men get older they sometimes suffer from dry mouth. This condition is known as xerostomia. Dry mouth happens when salivary glands fail to work properly. This causes a decrease in saliva production. The dryness may be uncomfortable for Sam. It may be a temporary problem or a chronic one.
Dry mouth can also be a side effect from medications. There are numerous medications which can affect salivary function. So it is important that Sam knows his medications and whether one has a side effect of dry mouth. If his dry mouth is due to a medication he is taking he should ask his doctor if there is an alternative medication which he could take. Snoring may also contribute to dry mouth. Sam should also discuss this issue with his doctor and dentist.
Here are some tips to prevent dry mouth:
- Stay hydrated by sipping water often
- Watch how much coffee or tea you drink because caffeine can dry out the mouth
- Chewing gum or sucking on a sugarless hard candy can help stimulate saliva flow
- Use a nasal strip at night to reduce snoring and sleeping with the mouth open
- Run a humidifier in your bedroom at night to keep moisture in the air
- Use an oral moisturizer or gel that a dentist recommends which are designed to provide relief from dry mouth
Please tell Sam not to ignore this problem and get some key advice from his doctor.

Happy Holidays from our team at Red Hot Mamas!
Holidays are a time to celebrate but this year things may look a lot different than last year. In our household we won’t be celebrating with our family members. It will just be with my spouse and dog. So our traditions have definitely changed due to COVID.
The holidays for me have always brought with it great stress. Many of you probably feel the same way. We all are juggling buying those thoughtful gifts for your family members. And, probably we are doing this on-line which can be exhausting. A lot of us are finishing up that end-of-year work which we are doing from our homes, and we are decorating our homes for the holiday season, all at once.
It’s important that we not forget our health. We all know that self-care is vital year round, but it’s even more important during this year’s stressful holiday season. You may need a little extra self-care.
So, what steps can we take to ensure that we will feel our best now and into the fresh new year ahead of us? Here are a few ways to do so:
- Manage stress by giving yourself a break. Moderation in all that you do should be your mantra. Avoid taking on too much as you will become stressed and fatigued. And, stop trying to be a perfectionist. Perfectionists bring on a lot of internal stress and unlimited worries. Try meditating, deep-breathing exercises, yoga, writing in a journal, and taking time out just for yourself.
- Keep yourself organized. Make lists so you won’t feel stressed about having to do things at the last minute.
- If your money resources are drained, its best to stick to your budget to maintain peace of mind. Not sticking to your budget certainly will bring on feelings of anxiety. You truly don’t have to buy an avalanche of gifts. You can even give your family homemade gifts as an alternative. Just decide on how much money you can actually afford to spend.
- Take advantage of online shopping, free shipping, discounts, suggestion lists can ease holiday stress
Don’t let the holidays become a free-for-all. Establish healthy habits:
- Eat healthy meals. Choose your indulgences carefully. Be cognizant of what you eat and steer away from all those holiday goodies. Keep them out of your reach. And, remember that a post meal walk will burn calories!
- Include regular physical activity in your daily routine. Maintain an exercise program. Just keep moving! Be active at least 2 ½ hours a week.

With more people staying home this year during the holidays and having busy schedules working from our homes, it is often easy to overlook home safety. For the accident-prone, Christmas is not one of the easiest holidays to navigate. When thinking about potential physical dangers of the holiday, the first person who pops in my head is Clark Griswold from the movie, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. Let’s for a moment consider just the personal ramifications of his risky behavior (tippy ladders used to hang lights, rabid squirrels living in the family Christmas tree). Those are damaging enough and should be a good safety reminder for everyone to not use this movie for holiday decorating tips!
Moreover, you should minimize your risk for an emergency room (ER) visit in these time of the pandemic.
Each year, hospital emergency rooms treat thousands of people for injuries including falls, cuts and shocks, related to lights, decorations and Christmas trees. Christmas trees are involved in an exorbitant amount of fires annually resulting in many deaths, injuries and millions of dollars in property loss and damage. Many of these accidents could have been prevented.
Undoubtedly, it is a hectic time of year filled with a lot of potentially hazardous activities and factors including decorations, trees, candles, lights, ice and ovens! But, it just wouldn’t be the same without all of these things. They are a big part of everyone’s tradition, but how can we make sure they don’t become the Grinch’s of our own holiday season?
As you prepare for the holidays, keep your season merry by taking some time to make your home a safe home. Make a list and check it twice!
The Tree
The tree is usually the focal point for everyone’s Christmas and on occasion it is even relegated as a Chanukah bush. Whether you choose an artificial tree or a real one, there are a few important safety tips to keep in mind.
Leading causes of Christmas tree fires happen because of electrical problems due to faulty lighting equipment; decorative lights; cords or plugs. And, also from heat sources which are too close to the tree.
Here’s some good safety information for trees. Some of these tips may seem obvious, but make sure you’re checkin’ the list and checkin’ it twice for a safe and jolly Christmas.
- When purchasing an artificial tree, be sure it is labeled, certified, or identified by the manufacturer as fire retardant.
- Choose a fresh tree which has green needles that do not fall off when touched.
- Before placing the tree in the stand, cut 1-2” from the base of the trunk.
- Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat source, like fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights.
- Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit.
- Add water to the tree stand. Be sure to add water daily.
- Use lights that have the label of an independent testing laboratory. Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use, but not for both.
- Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Connect no more than three strands of mini string sets and a maximum of 50 bulbs for screw-in bulbs.
- Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed.
- After Christmas, get rid of the tree when it begins dropping needles. Dried-out trees are a fire danger and should not be left in the home or garage, or placed outside against the home. Check with your local community to find a recycling program. Bring outdoor electrical lights inside after the holidays to prevent hazards and make them last longer.
The Kitchen
Cooking and the holidays go hand in hand. The leading cause of fires in the kitchen is unattended cooking.
Here are a few tips to keep your home safe while cooking:
- Use oven mitts or potholders when moving hot food from ovens, microwave ovens, or stovetops. Never use wet oven mitts or potholders as they can cause scald burns.
- Remember to keep combustibles like potholders and paper towels away from the stove.
- Plug microwave ovens and other cooking appliances directly into an outlet and never use an extension cord since it will overload the circuit and cause a fire.
- Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, or broiling food and if you leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove.
- Use a timer to remind you that you’re cooking.
- Never use an oven to heat your home or for any other purpose besides cooking.
- Turn pot handles away from the stove’s edge to prevent the pan from being knocked or pulled off the stove.
- Treat a burn right away by putting it in cool water for 10 to 15 minutes. Seek medical attention immediately if you have any questions about how to treat the burn.
- If your smoke detectors sound during normal cooking, after quickly making sure there is no fire, fan the area around the detector with a towel to clear smoke away from the detector. Don’t ever disable the detector when receiving nuisance alarms. Consider moving the detector further away from the stove if possible, but always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Know where the fire extinguisher is located (if you don’t have one, get one).
The Outdoors
To some, outdoor decorations are just as important as indoor ones. I always wonder how the people who live in the constantly glowing houses during the holiday season actually sleep when it looks like the lights of Times Square are shining in their yards.
Here are some safety tips for your yard this season:
- Have a certified electrician install a GFCI outlet, if you don’t already have one.
- Make sure product is intended to be used for outdoor Christmas tree lighting and follow all manufacture instructions.
- Any extension cords used for outdoor Christmas tree lights should also be intended specifically for use in the yard.
- Be careful of the placement of wires, especially around the doors, walkways and driveway.
- Water and electricity don’t mix, so keep any connections out of the snow/puddles and insert bulbs into sockets such that the sockets point down.
- Unplug outdoor Christmas lights before replacing bulbs.
- Don’t string outdoor Christmas tree lights on trees that come into contact with power lines.
- If re-using old outdoor Christmas tree lights, inspect the wire to ensure that there are no wear spots.
Don’t let the safety stickler who is writing this article prevent you from enjoying your holiday.
Laugh, have fun and enjoy your time with your family. Relax; enjoy your eggnog, but also remember to be safe.
