Burnout

Rev. Joshua Patty
Regional Minister and President

In the past month, I've seen several articles and essays detailing burnout among many professionals. Still I was unprepared for this survey result from Barna shared last week: 38% of clergy have considered quitting full-time ministry in the past year. This response was higher among younger clergy and even higher among mainline clergy -- a staggering 51% of those surveyed.

My heart breaks for all of our colleagues who are considering leaving ministry. I'm especially sensitive that this may include many Disciples ministers -- maybe even you. Even if you haven't considered quitting, I imagine that you are weary and emotionally thin.

I will keep sharing resources that I hope can help us face these challenges, address our self-care, and continue living out our callings. Here are a couple more. Recently Sandhya Jha and BK Woodson offered a 45 minute webinar offering strategies for clergy and social activities to find ways to thrive amidst these challenges. And Carey Nieuwhof offered a helpful essay to distinguish between self-medication and self-care. (Yes, Nieuwhof writes free essays to gain attention for his paid projects. I've never used any of those, but his essays can be insightful.)

Annual Standing Renewal

Annual ministerial standing renewal forms are now available. Don't wait until the last minute (Jan. 18) to complete them -- get them out of the way now! Thank you in advance keeping covenant as a Disciples minister.

Bible Study on Faith in Divided Times

Luther Seminary has shared this free Bible Study curriculum on "Diversity, Unity & Division," to help church leaders serve better in these times. This could be a guide for personal reflection or may help you offer a Bible study on this important issue. Access the Bible study here.
