When Giving Is All We Have
by Alberto Ríos
One river gives
Its journey to the next.
We give because someone gave to us.
We give because nobody gave to us.
We give because giving has changed us.
We give because giving could have changed us.
We have been better for it,
We have been wounded by it—
Giving has many faces: It is loud and quiet,
Big, though small, diamond in wood-nails.
Its story is old, the plot worn and the pages too,
But we read this book, anyway, over and again:
Giving is, first and every time, hand to hand,
Mine to yours, yours to mine.
You gave me blue and I gave you yellow.
Together we are simple green. You gave me
What you did not have, and I gave you
What I had to give—together, we made
Something greater from the difference.

A Reminder that TCS Is Different
As we all hopefully relax into this weekend of thanks, we ask that you take a moment to have a conversation with your student(s) about how TCS is different and how those differences are both a tremendous privilege and an added responsibility. Unlike traditional schools with their own buildings and surrounding property, TCS proudly claims that all of the Seattle Center is its campus. That campus includes many of Seattle's premier arts organizations and is full of exciting opportunities for our students to participate in the life of the city.
But Seattle Center and the Armory are public spaces visited daily by people from around the world. TCS has been a beloved part of the Armory community since the school was founded, but the Armory is not our school. Please remind your students that the we coexist as community members within the public space of the Armory. Our students get to enjoy the bathrooms, the food court, and the balcony like other visitors to the building, but those spaces do not belong to TCS. Students who are disruptive or destructive in these public spaces may be barred from the building by Seattle Center security, effectively making it impossible for those students to attend school. Such incidents are problematic for the students involved, but they also affect how our school community is perceived at the Seattle Center.
We know that some of our students are struggling with the return to in-person school. Dr Casey, Ms Hayes, Ms Tracey, and our beloved teachers are working every day to help our students reintegrate while maintaining learning standards. We ask that you continue to talk with your students about being respectful of people and spaces while helping them find productive outlets for the more than usual anxiety and frustration they are feeling in these unprecedented times. If you need help, please don't hesitate to reach out to Dr Casey or Ms Hayes.

Girls and Non-Binary Virtual Pixar Field Trip
There are six spots for Center School girl and non-binary students for a virtual field trip to Pixar on Dec 2, 9:30–10:30 pm. Participating students will need permission from their 1st period teacher to excuse themselves to the balcony or commons with their laptop and headphones. The field trip is part of the IGNITE Worldwide program (Inspiring Girls Now in Technology Education/Experience). We only have six spots, as this is an event with students from California high schools. Last year, this was a favorite event, so we're happy we can do it again. RSVP to Ms Wyn at wypottingerlev@seattleschools.org to receive the Zoom link. Please include a note from 1st period teacher granting permission to attend.

Please Donate to the 2021/22 CSCA Annual Fund
The Center School is a unique community with a small group of dedicated teachers and students from all over the school district. The Center School seeks to extend learning beyond the classroom and involve our students in the city and world beyond. To help support that effort, the CSCA seeks additional funds from families twice a year: the Annual Fund in the fall and the auction in the spring are the primary way the Center School Community Association raises money. You can donate now online via Paypal, where you have the option of choosing a one-time or monthly donation. You do not have to have a Paypal account to make a donation. Or look for the Annual Fund letter coming soon where you can contribute by check or credit card with the enclosed form. Thank you!
