Long Island Report | January 2021
Climate Jobs New York News
Hello,

I hope everyone's New Year is off to a healthy and great start. Needless to say, it is already a magnificent start for the offshore wind industry. Below you'll find the Climate Jobs NY January report - Long Island edition!
During Governor Cuomo's State of the State address, he put clean energy at the center of our economic recovery. The plan includes strategic investments in a number of areas essential to successfully building New York’s clean-energy future, including offshore wind, large-scale solar, energy transmission, and storage.

Two offshore wind projects were announced that total nearly 2,500 megawatts (MW) bringing the state's total procured pipeline up to 4,300 MW, half of our 2035 goal. Equinor scored big in this announcement securing Empire Wind 2 (1,260 MW) and Beacon Wind (1,230 MW) projects. Empire Wind 2 will be 20 miles off the south shore of western Long Island and interconnect into the Barrett substation in Oceanside. Beacon Wind is located approximately 50 miles off Long Island's eastern shores and will interconnect in Astoria via the Long Island Sound.
CJNY looks forward to working with the administration and partners to ensure the timely, successful completion of these projects, to make sure all the offshore wind jobs driven by state investment are good community-supporting union jobs—including permanent manufacturing, operations, and maintenance jobs—and to implement the governor’s commitment to using prevailing wage and project labor agreements across the projects.

There was also an announcement of a combined $644 million investment in port infrastructure in the capital region and Brooklyn. According to NYSERDA, "These investments will establish the nation’s first offshore wind tower manufacturing facility ready to service both offshore and onshore wind farms in the region at the Port of Albany and a cutting-edge staging facility and operations and maintenance hub at the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal." A Big Win for the South Fork Wind Project and Long Island Jobs!
The South Fork Wind Project had quite the milestone of its own. After four years of thorough engagement with the community, the Town of East Hampton Board and Trustees approved the Host Community Agreement and easement/lease agreements needed for the Beach Lane cable route in Wainscott.

This is a huge momentum driver for New York's inaugural offshore wind project and demonstrates the leadership of Supervisor Van Scoyoc, the Board and Trustees to take action on climate. CJNY continues to work with our East End partners who have been there from the start to see this project through to the finish line. Click here for more information.

To mobilize union support for last week's votes, Roger Clayman, Executive Director of the LI Federation of Labor, and I joined Suffolk AME President, Dan Levler, on his radio show Suffolk Matters to talk about the importance of the South Fork Wind Project and what offshore wind means for the labor movement. (l-r) Sen. Todd Kaminsky, Mariah Dignan, and Rep. Kathleen Rice
Congresswoman Kathleen Rice, D-NY 4th District, has earned a seat on the House Energy & Commerce Committee. This is a huge win for Nassau's working families and residents who are passionate about taking action on the climate crisis. In a recent Newsday article, Rep. Rice highlighted that designating new offshore wind energy areas in the NY Bight is a priority for her in E&C.

Last August, the Congresswoman called on the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, BOEM, to finalize these areas after years of inaction. We look forward to continuing to work with the Congresswoman, our environmental and industry partners, and the Biden administration to designate and auction new WEAs far off LI shores by the end of this year.
Well, it has been quite the start to 2021. Please let me know if you have any questions or thoughts. Stay safe!

In solidarity,
Mariah Dignan
