The Messenger of St. Mark's | After Pentecost | August 17, 2023

For your thought:

Just then a Canaanite woman from that region came out and started shouting, “Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is tormented by a demon.” But he did not answer her at all. And his disciples came and urged him, saying, “Send her away, for she keeps shouting after us.” He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”

--Matthew 15:22-24

Surviving & Preventing Abuse: St. Mark's Survivors Share Their Stories

Each summer at St. Mark's we work to get ready for a new school and program year. Part of getting ready is renewing our commitment to making St. Mark's a Safe Church, for everyone--including children, youth, elders, and other vulnerable people. One step we can take to prevent abuse of all kinds, including sexual abuse, is to openly talk about it as a church community. Talking about difficult subjects in the context of a safe, supportive, spiritual community can be healing for those who have been impacted by abuse and also plays an important role in protecting others from experiencing abuse.

We are offering a two-part Safe Church Forum at St. Mark's

Part 1 (Sunday, August 20th, 11:30 a.m.): members of St. Mark's who have been impacted by abuse will share their experiences as part of a panel discussion on Surviving Abuse.

Part 2 (Sunday, August 27th, 11:30 a.m.): we'll review/highlight the basic Safe Church policies that all members of St. Mark's are expected to uphold as part of our commitment to making St. Mark's a Safe Church.

Ministry: Join the Choir of St. Mark's

The St. Mark’s Choir began rehearsals this week, but it's never too late to join our choir! The choir rehearses every Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. and gathers on Sundays at 8:50 a.m. to prepare for worship. All teens and adults are welcome to join; no audition is necessary. Choir is a fun and spiritually enriching way to serve the parish and training is provided. If you feel uncertain about your singing, new members are offered three free (and optional) voice lessons to help them get started. Many members of the choir have children and a variety of childcare options are available. If you have questions about joining the choir please contact our Choir Director, Jeremy Wirths, by emailing him here.

Save the Dates: Parish Campout 2024

We have the dates for our 2024 campout: July 19-21, 2024. Mark it on your calendars and join us next year!

Ministry: Coffee Hour Hospitality

coffee_croissants.jpg

Are you currently a Coffee Hour Hospitality Team member or is service to others part of your calling? Please join us this Sunday (8/20) before worship for a brief question-and-answer session in the Parish Hall/kitchen at 8:30 a.m.

This will be a great way to get your questions answered! The Coffee Hour Hospitality Teams typically only serve once a month with the same team members on a specific Sunday of the month (first, second, third, or forth - the fifth Sundays are slated for pancake breakfasts). This will be a great way for all to be on the same page who are currently signed up, as well as to gain more team members as our fall program ramps up.

Thank you for being a part of St. Mark's radical hospitality.

If you have any questions, please call or text Pauline Artery at 505-382-5255.

Community Conversation: Spirituality and the 12 Steps

Breathing Under Water: Spirituality and the 12 Steps

A Community Introduction to Richard Rohr's book & concepts

Facilitators: Cole McLaren & Thomas Russell

Sunday, September 3rd, 11:15 a.m. in the Library

"We are all addicted in some way. When we learn to identify our addiction, embrace our brokenness, and surrender to God, we begin to bring healing to ourselves and our world." In his book, Breathing Under Water: Spirituality & the Twelve Steps, Richard Rohr shows how the gospel principles in the Twelve Steps can free anyone from any addiction—from an obvious dependence on alcohol or drugs to the more common but less visible addiction that we all have to sin.

How does addiction (to ideas, beliefs, habits, toxic relationships, and/or substances) constrain our freedom and impede our flourishing? How might the Gospel, the 12 Steps, and/or Contemplative Prayer and Practice help us all experience more freedom and the fullness of life that God desires for us? Join St. Mark's members Thomas Russell and Cole McLaren for a community conversation as we begin to explore these important questions together. If you are interested in being part of this conversation, but can't join the gathering on September 3rd, please contact Thom (via email here) or Cole (via email here).
