The Inaugural Dr. Melvin H. Amler Prize for Innovation to be Announced


The Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the Biomedical Space Conference on September 15 is set to kick off at 2:30 p.m. at 7 Dana Road with the awarding of the inaugural Dr. Melvin H. Amler Prize for Innovation. The award is honor of the late Melvin H. Amler, M.S., D.D.S., a National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded biomedical researcher and practicing dentist whose creativity inspired his students and colleagues for 65 years. Established by the Amler family, the goal of the award competition is to encourage and support a creative sense of inquiry and the joy of discovery in students on the NYMC campus. Maridalia Lillis Helped Provide Critical Health Care While on a Medical Mission to Honduras 


With the thought of helping those in need, Maridalia Lillis, a medical technician in the Department of Family and Community Medicine, traveled to Honduras in for a seven-day mission trip in July, helping physicians communicate with patients in Spanish as part of a team that saw upwards of 100 patients each day. Having lived in Honduras for seven years as a child, Ms. Lillis fulfilled a desire to return to the country while also helping bring vital medical care to people who normally wouldn’t have access to it. 29th Annual Faculty Author Celebration and Awards Set for September 21


The Phillip Capozzi, M.D., Library is pleased to host the 29th Annual Faculty Author Celebration and Awards in-person in the Terence Cardinal Cooke Auditorium on September 21, at 4:00 p.m. The event will recognize faculty authors who published during the 2021 calendar year. The awards honor authors in a variety of categories considering engagement, distribution and the influence of their publications. During the celebration, College leadership and authors will discuss their work and their experiences publishing during this prolific year of research at NYMC. This event is co-sponsored by the Phillip Capozzi, M.D., Library, the Office of the Chancellor and the Office of the Vice President of Research. Register for the event.

Monica McHenry, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, Fights Stigma Surrounding Speech Disorders Through Her Work and Teaching


Monica McHenry, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, professor of speech-language pathology (SLP) and director of the Voice and Motor Speech Lab, can’t envision herself in any other profession. From a young age, her environment included people from different parts of the world, exposing her to different types of speech and leaving her fascinated with the science behind it. Since her undergraduate studies, the field has evolved a great deal but she believes it can be improved, especially when it comes to reducing stigma for people who struggle with speech.
