A Knight's Tale | April Newsletter
Dear North Side Community School Friends,

This school year has been focused on getting students reacquainted with in-person instruction and dealing with the tremendous learning loss our students have experienced due to the pandemic. We have used targeted interventions, such as the READ 180 program to help our middle school students recover from reading loss. This program is targeted at increasing literacy scores. We have seen great results!

An important part of our school is our extended day program. We have not been able to offer this since the start of the pandemic. We have taken steps to restart the program this year by reintroducing sports (basketball and soccer), Girls on the Run, and arts programs from The Bailey Foundation. Our students have been enjoying the extra-curricular activities.

We are just a few short weeks away from our annual gala, The Magic of Childhood. We will celebrate the impact that North Side is having in the lives of students, and raise funds for the coming school year. The last day to buy tickets is tomorrow, April 13 - I hope to see you there!

Sincerely,
John Grote
Executive Director
READ 180 Program
This year we introduced the READ180 program. Thirty seven middle school students who were performing several grade levels behind in reading participated in this program. READ 180 helps build reading comprehension, academic vocabulary, and writing skills for students in grades 4 and up. We are excited to report that 85% of students in this program have increased their reading scores!
Alum Feature: Darian Williams
This month we are excited to highlight Darian Williams as our featured alum! Darian attended North Side from 1st through 4th grade.

After leaving North Side, Darian went on to attend middle school at Kipp Inspire Academy and Busch Middle School.

Darian is currently finishing his Senior year at Christian Brothers College High School. He is planning to attend Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in the Fall!

A few of Darian's accomplishments in school include participating on the robotics team and working/teaching at the Science Center in the Yes Program. His future goal is to get a degree in Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering.

Way to go, Darian - we are cheering you on!
After-School Enrichment: The Bailey Foundation
The Bailey Foundation has partnered with North Side to provide after-school enrichment activities, including music, drama, and dance, to our students. The Bailey Foundation has a mission to create opportunities for youth to become positive adults who impact the world in inspiring ways. Thanks to The Bailey Foundation for providing our students with excellent programming and nutritious snacks each week!
Save the Date: Give STL Day - Thursday, May 5
Early giving is now open for Give STL Day 2022! Give STL Day is an annual giving movement where donors come together to support organizations and initiatives across St. Louis. Consider supporting North Side for Give STL Day! Your donation will support updated classroom supplies and equipment for the next school year. We are equipping all classrooms with smart boards and replacing textbooks and workbooks in math, science, language arts and social studies.
