Children's Garden Now Open @ the Nevins Library

On a lovely spring Saturday in late June, Mayor Zanni, City Councilmen, Library Turstees, Library staff and Friends of the library joined to officially open the garden space that was provided by the Friends of the Nevins Library.  This space located off of the Children's Room,  includes benches and a small stage for storytimes, weather permitting.  There are perennials and flowering bushes to make the space truly inviting to all families as well as those just wanting a peaceful place to read.  All those attending the opening were very impressed by the workmanship of all the artisans involved. This is just the beginning but it is a wonderful addition to the libraries grounds and is a welcoming gateway to the trees and spaces beyond.

We Are Market Basket : Author Visit

August 27th at 7pm  Grant Welker, co-author of a new book "We Are Market Basket: the story of the Unlikely Grassroots Movement that Saved a Beloved Business"

A reporter for the Lowell Sun, Welker has studied the DeMoulas family and last year's takeover attempt by members of the Board of Directors of the Market Basket Supermarket chain. He will discuss the movement against the takeover, and the controversy that surrounded the struggle for control of the corporation . He will cover the family divisions as well as the uplifting loyalty of the employees who rallied to save their company and their beloved CEO. This tumultuous battle lasted longer than anyone thought possible and resulted in empty shelves and long picket lines and eventually the involvement of governors from both Massachusetts and New Hampshire in an attempt to resolve the crisis. Welker and his co-author Daniel Korschun have written about this episode in great depth and have earned a starred review in Publisher's Weekly.

New Reading Machine for the Visually Impaired

Thanks to a generous donation by the Methuen Commission on Disabilities, the Nevins Library now owns a new device to assist patrons with low vision to read books and other materials at a higher magnification. Last month we purchased a VisioBook reader, which is a portable magnifying reader for use with books, magazines, documents or pretty much anything a person needs to read. The new technology employed in this device makes it easier to use and has a much clearer image quality than our old equipment This device will be beneficial to anyone who may be struggling with fine print of documents as well as books and magazines. In order to see and use the VisioBook just come to the Reference desk and we'll be happy to give you some instant training on a device that is very easy to use!
