Raven Report: March 23, 2022
The glass garage door to our new Innovation Lab has been ordered! We are one step closer to turning this dream into a reality!

We are just over halfway to our $50,000 fundraising goal (matched by an anonymous donor to a total of $100,000). We still need to raise $21,614 to meet our $50,000 match to fully fund this first phase of construction in Summer 2022. Board Member Publishes Article on Native Gardens
Dana Thomas, Summit parent, Board member, and botanist was recently published in the Missouri Native Plant Society publication, Petal Pusher, for her article on native gardens on The Summit campus.

Check out the following excerpt, and click the link below to read the full article.

Children are losing their connection to nature. Entire books have been written on this topic. We’ve watched the population of the United States shift from a historically large rural population to present day, when more than 80% of people live in urban areas.

As this shift has occurred, so has the ability of children to explore, to engage, and to become friends with the wild plants around them, to call them by name or to even notice them at all [...]

Thanks to the open minds and ideals of progressive education embodied by the faculty and administration of The Summit, the generosity of MDC’s Community Conservation Grant program, and the project management provided by staff of NatureCITE, children at The Summit Preparatory School are participating in a project to convert their nearly seven-acre campus to native Missouri plant species.

Around Campus
Third Grade Celebrates Student Choice
In third grade, students have completed a map showing the area of the Louisiana Purchase and the journey of Lewis and Clark. They have learned that Clark was a great cartographer and drew maps of the new land. After reading a book together about the perilous journey, Mrs. Weis and her students engaged in class discussion about the book and what students learned.

Third grade students have been given a choice board to further their studies on Lewis and Clark in different ways. With a mix of "must do" assignments and "choice" activities, students may choose from a variety of interests and learning styles with a mix of technology and non-technology based lessons. Mrs. Weis says, "It’s fun to see the students get excited about feeling empowered to make their own choices!" Check out the collage above for examples of the variety and creativity each students brings to project-based learning shared with their families at their Trimester Celebration!
Middle School Language Arts Presentations
Before heading into spring break, seventh and eighth graders completed their differentiated projects to capstone their learning of the novel Fahrenheit 451.

Some chose to do a "book trailer," a video, similar to a movie trailer, that highlights the major events and themes of the book. Some chose to compile a soundtrack where they selected at least ten songs and included a written argument about why they chose these songs, which event(s) they reflect, and why they are a good fit to the story. Others chose to do a journal for the protagonist, detailing what happens immediately after the events of the novel.

After completing their projects, students then presented their final work to their classmates to conclude their discussion of Ray Bradbury's famous dystopian novel.
