Moon Shot for Equity Update
By DeAnn Possehl
Moonshot for Equity is a national effort led by the education firm, EAB, aimed at ending equity gaps in higher education by 2030. The University of Wisconsin-Parkside, along with Carthage College, Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) and UW-Milwaukee comprise the first regional consortium of higher education institutions in the country to sign on to the initiative. As the Moon Shot project moves forward, we will provide regular updates on the work to date. Today’s update will focus on three areas - Hold Reform team, the Navigate Academic planner tool, and Moonshot for equity e-training.
Hold Reform Team
The hold reform team is completing an audit of holds in our student information system and analyzing equity impacts of our current processes. To date, we have inactivated 40 different holds. The team will be spending the next few weeks looking more closely at the 22 remaining holds in an effort to minimize barriers to registration activity.
Academic planner implementation
Since March, another team has been in the process of implementing the academic planner module in Navigate. When completed, students will be able to create personal degree plans and register for classes through the new tool. Right now, we anticipate the tool to launch in mid-August.
Moon Shot for Equity e-training
In May, the monthly USC Racial Equity eConvening series began with a session titled “Leading Productive Conversations about Race”. Eighty-four staff and faculty participated in the first session and participants indicated they found the workshop engaging and practical. The next session is scheduled for July 14. For a complete list of the monthly sessions, please check our the Moon Shot for Equity training website. If you would like to participate, please email possehl@uwp.edu. Recordings for each session and materials will be made available through this website as they become available.
Watch for more details about other aspects of the Moon Shot for Equity project in upcoming communications. Questions? Contact possehl@uwp.edu.

Meet the University Communications Team
Within the last year the University Communications team has gone through a few and while many of you know who we are, we wanted to reintroduce ourselves!
Director of University Communications: Andrew (Drew) Savagian - Drew has been serving as temporary UW-Parkside communications director since October 2020, working 50 percent time in that role while continuing with his UW System position as internal communications manager. He joined UW System in February of 2020 after working for more than 21 years at the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources in a number of communication roles.
Communications and Media Relations Specialist: Robyn Elliott - Robyn joined the team as our new Communications and Media Relations Specialist last November, but had been helping coordinate UWP social media since early July 2020. Robyn handles numerous communication tools for UW-Parkside, including the Monday Update, social media channels, news releases, and more.
Communications Assistant: Derek Fye - Derek works as the Creative Services front office manager and has been involved with UW-Parkside communications since 2017 when he joined as a student intern. He graduated in December 2018 with a B.A. in English and a communication minor. Derek's duties include tracking Parkside media stories, assisting with commencement communications, and monitoring daily clips and weekly highlights.
Communications Student Intern: Grace Scalzo - Grace just finished up her sophomore year at UW-Parkside and joined the communication team as our student intern. Grace will be working on our social media channels and other communications. She has her own campus IGTV series, “Touching Base with Grace” found on the Ranger Athletics and Parkside Instagram accounts.
Use the Let Us Know form if you have any communications requests or use the new vanity link: uwp.edu/luk to keep us up-to-date on what is going on in your department!
