Session Notes

Business:

  • Session approved the Facility Use Request from Grace Notes for use of the Sanctuary for a recital on July 21, 2023.
  • Session approved the Facility Use Request from Narcotics Anonymous for use of the Great Hall for a Game Night, Saturday, July 22, 2023
  • Session approved the Facility Use Request from OLLI for use of a Sunday school classroom for their fall session of Bridge classes, 9:00 – 11:00 am and 1:00 - 3:00 pm, Tuesday and Thursday, September 26, 28, October 3, 5, 10, 12, 17, 19, 24, 26, 31 and November 2, 2023.
  • Session approved the Facility Use Request from Ester Kim for use of the Sanctuary for a piano recital Friday and Saturday, December 15 – 16, 2023, 2:00 – 7:00 pm.
  • Session approved forming an Ad Hoc committee comprised of Dave Adams, Jack Bagent, and Carol Behrmann to secure a new Pianist.
  • Session approved hiring Arturo Fernandez as Pianist beginning August 27, 2023, at $600.00 per month.
  • Session approved forming an Ad Hoc committee comprised of Carol Behrmann, Connie Buck, Louise Dye, and Sherry Hutchinson to review and update Highland’s Emergency Preparedness Plan.
  • Session approved donating the Acer laptop computer to the Capitol Area Corporate Recycling Council.


Committee Reports:


Pastor’s Report

  • Rev. Day announced that he would be retiring from service at the end of 2023. Session will meet with COM Liaison, Beth Paskoff, to determine options for Highland Presbyterian Church before announcing Rev. Day’s retirement to the Congregation.


Christian Education & Congregational Care

  • Lagniappe Ladies met for lunch on June 21 at BJ’s Brewhouse, and July 19 at Albasha Greek and Lebanese (Bluebonnet).
  • Eduard Teregulov, Albina Khalipova and Rachel Reese-Kohlmeyer held a recital in honor and thanks for Highland Presbyterian Church, at the church on Sunday July 16, 2023. The recital was followed by a reception hosted by Eduard and Albina.
  • A Farewell Reception for Eduard and Albina was held on July 23 following worship. A photo book and cash gift were presented to them in thanks for their service to Highland.
  • A third quarter (July – September) sign-up sheet for liturgist, flowers, refreshments, and communion was organized by Connie Buck.


Evangelism/Membership

  • The average attendance for May was 15; the average for June was 14; and the average for July was 20.
  • We welcomed a guest minister (Rev. Michael Elmore) and a guest pianist in May, and a guest minister (Rev. Anne Cramer) and a guest cellist in June. There were five visitors in May, six in June, and six in July.


Committee Reports (cont.):


Financial

  • Session received the May financial reports. For the month of May, expenses of $10,384.26 exceeded income of $5,467.00 by ($4,917.26). 
  • Session received the June financial reports. For the month of June, expenses of $4,450.62 exceeded income of $3,595.41 by ($855.21). 
  • Session received the Annual Audit for 2021 and 2022. All financial records were found to be accurate and in fair order. Connie Leonard is commended and thanked for doing such a thorough report.


Missions

  • The Pentecost Offering was received on May 28. The total amount collected was $765.00.
  • Our Daily Bread has had a very little bread to be delivered during the summer months. Our drivers continue to deliver when there is bread. They also deliver the items in the church’s food basket.


Personnel

  • Eduard Teregulov received a job offer from Concordia College, Moorhead, MN. He and Albina will leave the first part of August. Albina tendered her resignation effective July 30, 2023. They will be greatly missed.
  • A suggested candidate, Arturo Fernandez, was contacted and interviewed for the position of Pianist. 


Property

  • The air conditioning unit for the Sunday School Classrooms was repaired and ser-viced.
  • A new oak tree was planted in the front yard in celebration of Highland’s 40th Anniversary.
  • Produce from the garden has been delivered to Our Shepherd’s Market.


Worship

  • An Ad Hoc committee comprised of Dave Adams (Treasurer), Carol Behrmann (Worship), and Jack Bagent (Personnel) was formed to begin a search for a new church pianist. Albina was able to provide several suggestions of possible candidates.
  • Rev. Anne Cramer served as pulpit supply on Sunday, June 25, while Jeff was in Cincinnati, OH with the Zion City Basketball team.
  • Communion was celebrated Sunday, July 2, 2023.
  • The projection computer was repaired in June. Powerpoint worked successfully while the computer was out-of-commission.
  • The top paraments will be changed at the end of August and will stay up until Ad-vent begins in December.
