Weekly news & updates

January 15, 2021
Dear SCBA Parents:

-----Greetings on the 2nd full week of 2021. I want to take this opportunity to share with you that I am so blessed to work at SCBA. Last week, with the attack on our nation’s Capitol, and realizing now that this could very well be a defining moment in our country’s history, I was thankful to be here and know that I could go over to the Church and pray. Pray for peace, for everyone involved, for answers and mostly for our country to begin to work together. As I work with scholars who make mistakes, I visit with them about being part of the problem or part of the solution. We discuss how being part of the solution could change the situation and how being part of the solution is always the better way, more than likely, the way Jesus would handle it. We want to be like Jesus!

-----Last week I shared information with all of our teachers on how to address the situation that happened at the Capitol with our scholars. The main message that needs to be shared with our scholars is they are safe. It is our responsibility to keep them safe and every person in this building is going to do that. Focusing on what we can do - which is pray - is valuable as well. I think the one thing ALL our scholars can do is to pray for everyone to get along and be kind to each other. Again, we are all so blessed to be in a school setting where we can pray and ask for God’s help with everyone treating each other with respect and kindness. How powerful to know God loves to hear our scholars prayers and works hard to answer them daily.

-----Catholic Schools Week is quickly approaching! This is the time of the year where we focus on our Catholic school and celebrate all who make SCBA what it is today! Please check the flyer in this newsletter that shares an overview of the plans for the week! This year’s theme is Faith, Excellence, Service! Our goal for the week is to celebrate all three: our Faith, our excellence and provide service!

-----SCBA will be supporting the parish “Souper Bowl’ collection for the St. Charles Borromeo Food Pantry. Our goal is for every school family to donate at least 25 canned goods during the week. If you are able to donate more, we will be very happy to accept more as well! Scholars will be able to earn different incentives each day for their canned goods donation! We have some fun activities planned for the scholars for this week!

-----We will kick off Catholic Schools Week with our scholars participating in the weekend masses on January 30 and 31st. We will have scholars as greeters at all the Masses and also as lectors and singers. We want all of our families to attend one of the weekend Masses Saturday, Jan. 30th at 4 PM, Sunday, Jan. 31st at 8:30 AM or 11:00 AM. All scholars need to wear their Dress uniform to church!

-----If your family hasn’t started attending mass in person due to COVID-19, this would be a wonderful gift you can give your family and the parish - by attending Mass in person this weekend and thanking the parish for their love and support of SCBA.

-----Many blessings,

-----Dr. Hopson

Annual Stakeholder Survey
Dear Parents,
-----Our school is always trying improve its ability to serve our mission. As part of the improvement process, we annually collect survey data from our stakeholder groups (parents, staff, and students). Your opinion about the performance of our school is important to us and so we ask that you click on the link below and take the time to complete this important survey. The survey was designed by Cognia, our accreditation association, that serves public and non-public schools. Without the following mental modifications, some of the questions will be difficult to answer as it is more geared toward public schools.
-----Some items on the survey uses ‘school leadership’. When you see ‘school leadership’, you should think of the principal or director. Some items use ‘school governing body’. When you see ‘school governing body’, you should think of the ‘Pastor and Principal/Director’ as a team. If you are school without a pastor, just think of ‘Principal or Director’.”
-----Thanks for giving your time in completing this important survey. Please complete no later than January 29, 2021.

COVID-19 Updates and Resources
SCBA Covid-19 Update- January 2021

-----As we begin the 2nd semester of our school year here are some reminders of the SCBA’s expectations in dealing with sickness and COVID-19.

Reporting a Sick Child to SCBA:
  • Parents have a responsibility to report a scholar who is sick.
  • SCBA will develop a procedure to track the type of symptoms sick scholars are exhibiting such as temperature, symptoms, length of current symptoms, etc.
  • Records are to be maintained in a safe, confidential file for one year.
  • Individuals presenting one or more of the symptoms below, or who test positive for COVID-19, will be excluded from school/ECC.
  • Symptoms of illness and possible COVID-19, including, but not limited to, the following list (CDC, MO School Board Association):
  • Fever 100.0 or greater
  • Cough
  • Chills
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Fatigue
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Congestion or runny nose
  • Nausea or vomiting

Dealing with quarantine or isolation procedures: (Updated as of 1/1/2021)

  • A scholar or teacher/staff member who tests positive for COVID-19 will need to isolate for at least 10 days. Scholars or teacher/staff members can return to school and/or work after 10 days IF they have been symptom free for at least 24 hours and can wear a mask to return to school/work.
  • If a mask can’t be worn, then the full 14 day isolation period will be mandated.
  • Scholars/classes who have been in close contact with a person who tests positive for COVID-19 will need to quarantine at home for a recommended amount of time. CDC recommends 14 day quarantine.
  • Quarantine can end after day 10 IF you have no symptoms of COVID-19 and you are willing to wear a mask and monitor your symptoms during the additional 4 day period.

-----So, SCBA will begin to follow this guideline and quarantine scholars/classes for at least 10 days. Those scholars who have no symptoms will be able to return to school after 10 days of quarantine.
-----The most important thing to remember is if your scholar is not feeling well, please keep them home.
-----If there is a need for a class to quarantine or for your scholar to isolate due to testing positive, Kindergarten through 8th grade will provide a remote learning opportunity for your scholar. Your scholar’s teacher will be in contact with you to get this set up for your scholar. Please know that getting everything in place for remote learning can take at least a day to get set up. Your scholar’s teacher will be in touch with you once everything is ready.
-----Thank you for partnering with SCBA as we move forward during this different year! Working together will keep our school open - hopefully for the remainder of the school year!
