Welcome to the AFP Chicago January 2022 Newsletter

Dear AFP Members,
Happy New Year! My name is Nathan Armstrong, and I am honored to serve as the 2022 President of AFP Chicago. I am grateful to have this opportunity to say hello, to share a few thoughts about the New Year, and to shout-out a few of the great programs, initiatives, and opportunities that AFP volunteers and staff will be bringing to you in the months ahead—a year I am approaching with a healthy amount of cautious optimism.
Cautious optimism is a trait I find in abundance in my fellow fundraisers. Our work is often focused on supporting idealism with pragmatism; when we encounter an extraordinary vision for improving the world, we answer with a slew of tough logistical questions. These questions come from a place of hope! Imagining the world as a better place is only the first step: a timeline and a prospect list are sure to follow. It is no surprise that fundraisers are many of my favorite people: we dream resourcefully.
We will not pretend that these last two years have not tested our commitment, our wits, and our stamina. I’m certain that those feelings will not end in the year ahead. Fatigue and burnout will continue to pursue us. So what can we do?
We turn to each other—our colleagues, peers, and mentors—for the advice, encouragement, and support that we need. This career has given me so many friends that have encouraged me, challenged me, and supported me throughout the years. I am so thankful for these extraordinary people, and I have AFP Chicago to thank for so many of those friendships.
I accepted the presidency this year to return the favor: to help make AFP Chicago the most welcoming place for experienced and aspiring fundraisers alike to find fellowship and professional growth opportunities. If you are not sure where to find those things with us, I hope you will reach out to me! I am here to serve. Here are a few such opportunities you may find of interest:
-
AFP Chicago Workshops, including this program taking place in January
-
AFP Chicago Affinity Groups, with dedicated cohorts for fundraisers who identify as African American, Latinx, Asian/Pacific Islander, LGBTQ+, and for White Fundraisers Advocating for Racial Equity
- AFP Chicago Networking Events, with a schedule of virtual get-togethers coming soon
-
AFP Peer Mentoring, which will invite new applicants of all experience levels in the spring
Like many of you, we are hoping to host some of these events in-person in the year ahead, but we will make those decisions based on the safety and comfort of our membership, our volunteers, and our staff. That is just one of many ways we will be focused on taking care of each other in the year ahead.
To you and your families, I wish you all the best in 2022! I can’t wait to meet you, or to see you again. We need you, your voice, and your passion in our community, and I hope we have given you the opportunity to lend it.
Peace, health, and happiness,
Nathan Armstrong
President, 2022 AFP Chicago Board of Directors

Reflective Practice Group for Peer Mentors - Virtual
Friday, January 28, 2022
12:00 - 1:15 pm
Have you thought about becoming a mentor but haven’t yet taken the plunge? Are you unsure about the types of skills you might need, or the resources you might offer as a mentor? If you’re currently mentoring someone, would you like some additional guidance to ensure an enriching experience for you and your protégé?
Mentoring helps us grow as professionals and managers. Being a mentor lets us pass on knowledge, skills and resources to other fundraisers, build important networks, and strengthen our community.
Jennifer Dettloff and Christopher Chantson, Co-Chairs of AFP Chicago’s Peer Mentoring Program, invite you to join a virtual reflective practice group to discuss best practices and skills of being an effective mentor. Attendance will be limited to 10 participants. This will be a cameras-on, participatory session. The reflective practice group is free, but attendees must be members of AFP Chicago in good standing.

Amy Funk
Senior Vice President, Ter Molen Watkins & Brandt, LLC
Member, AFP Chicago Board of Directors and Peer Mentoring Committee
As fundraisers, we need to have enormous confidence in our ability to succeed and hit our goals. That confidence carries us through donor asks and allows us to reassure the nonprofits we serve that we’re capable of bringing in the revenue needed to achieve our missions.
But, for almost everyone, there will come a time that our confidence is shaken. We’ll take a job that isn’t a fit for some reason, or one where our board or Executive Director doesn’t understand fundraising or sets unachievable goals. We’ll be pushed out of a role even though we’re succeeding on paper. It can be hard to come back from that, to feel like you are good at fundraising – even with a long track record of success.
It’s not something we like to talk about, but, once you broach the topic, almost everyone will have their own story.
This is one of those times when it’s great to have a mentor, to have someone with whom you can share the setback and who can tell you their own experience with a bump in the fundraising road. It’s also one of the most rewarding things about being a mentor – helping another fundraising professional navigate that situation, and seeing them come through it on the other side.
As someone who has been mentored through a rough patch in my career, and has done the same for others, I cannot recommend enough getting involved in AFP Chicago’s Peer Mentoring Program. Let’s share our stories and help each other bridge the challenges that everyone encounters in their career at one point or another. The deadline for the upcoming Spring 2022 Class is Friday, February 18; applications and eligibility criteria are available on the AFP Chicago website.
Best wishes to everyone for a successful 2022!

Chamberlain Scholarship Awarded to Marisa Castillo
|
|
Marisa Castillo
Development Officer, Women's Link Worldwide, 2021 AFP Chicago Fellow
The Chamberlain Scholarship program honors Ralph E. Chamberlain, CFRE. Mr. Chamberlain had a long and distinguished career of service to the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), beginning in the 1960s when the organization was formed as the National Society of Fund Raisers (NSFR), through the late 1970s when the name was changed to the National Society of Fund Raising Executives (NSFRE), and until his death in 1999. Mr. Chamberlain’s dedication to the organization we now know as AFP never faltered in his long volunteer career with the Association. Because of his long-time support of the Foundation’s annual fund and generous planned gift, the AFP Board of Directors renamed their Conference Scholar Program in 2000 to honor Mr. Chamberlain’s memory and commitment to the Association. Read more about Ralph E. Chamberlain here.
The AFP Foundation offers every AFP chapter in AFP Accord for 2021 one Chamberlain Scholarship, which covers the recipient’s conference registration to AFP ICON 2022 in Las Vegas. The scholarship is available to individuals who have never attended AFP ICON. Chapters are encouraged to promote the Chamberlain Scholarship program locally.
