From Lisbon with Love

I got the chance to spend a lovely week in Lisbon, with our Board of Advisors member Mary Ann Pierce of MAP Digital. MAP Digital’s Meta Meetings can handle really large, multisession events that require both compliance and security. She presented a killer speech at The Global Summit for Women about the need for women to tech up and amplify their social presence.

Robin Raskin with Stas Zaslavsky

Next we attended WebSummit where there were hundreds of cool start-ups and even more entrepreneurial energy. Attendees were positively exuberant about being back together in person. Looking like a NY bag lady, I met up with Stas Zaslavsky of Vii Events. The company creates beautifully rendered 3D images to hold virtual events. It even built a replica of WebSummit at its exhibit booth. Vii-Events won The Best Exhibition Technology Award at Event Tech Live London. Mazel Tov.

Instead of some tech CEO, Frances Haugen, whistleblower, and quintessential girl next door, opened WebSummit in Lisbon. Later we heard from Nick Clegg and Chris Cox from Facebook, as they tried to keep a stiff upper lip and march forward toward the metaverse in spite of the problems they face here IRL. Read my Live from Lisbon take on it in Techonomy.

PlexiCam

The key to engagement is eye contact with your audience. PlexiCam lets your camera slide along different locations on your screen. Because it's movable it’s easy to maintain eye contact. Costs less and is easier to use than a teleprompter.

Slido

Slido is a longtime fave for encouraging audience engagement through interactive features for your in-person, online, or hybrid meetings and presentations. Add live polls, quizzes, word clouds, and more to a wide number of applications.

Watch this Space

“Community builder” is the hottest new job description since the Great Resignation began. Friend of VEG, RD Whitney just launched the Community Leaders Institute (CLI) with an event coming up this Spring. We’ll be working closely with them.

400 Event Planners Can’t All Be Wrong

A survey of 400 events professionals by The Vendry finds that events will become more about building communities than building an invite list. In sum, they found that “experiences need to go beyond a cocktail hour and events need to create long-lasting connections.” Lots of event pros quoted in this report.

Crypto Coachella

That’s what some folks are calling the crazy scene that erupted in NYC for what was ostensibly an event with a rather high-priced ticket (over $1,000) called NFT.NYC. Turns out that most of the NFT fun happened after dark with parties aboard NYC Yachts and at tons of clubs. As Kevin Roose at the New York Times observed, real life is a weird place for a coming-out party for NFTs. Best read about the NFT Weekend comes from our own Board of Advisor member Sharon Weisman, who looks at the power of NFTS to shake up so many of our old businesses.

Meet the Metaverse of Toys

It's official... we're building a “Welcome to the Metaverse” Area at Toy Fair, NY. The toy/game industry should be at the forefront of creating an inventive space for their digital assets. Read all about it and reach out if you're interested. Exhibits, engagements, and panels are all included.
