Industry Updates:

Ever Wonder How Much Gas & Electricity an Average New Yorker Uses?  And What It Costs? – Jessica Waldorf, Department of Public Service Chief of Staff and Director of Policy Implementation, gave testimony at the July 20th Public Service Commission meeting on the implementation of the State’s Climate Law (CLCPA). Among other important information, her testimony included data on the cost of energy for New Yorkers and the average monthly energy use for various classes of customers.

Waldorf noted New Yorkers pay about $140 Billion for energy annually:

·      $26B for fuels – gasoline, diesel, natural gas,

·      $21B for electricity,

·      $27B for energy related investments in buildings, and

·      $63B for capital projects and transportation sector

Regarding monthly energy use, see the screenshot below. 83 therms equals around 2,430 kWh, so the average New Yorker uses around four times as much energy for heating and hot water as for electrical applications in their home.

Waldorf’s testimony started about 1 hour and 10 minutes into the meeting and she stopped around 1:40 with the cost comments coming around 1:38. PSC meeting recording here.

NY HEAT Ice Cream Tour - On August 1st Renewable Heat Now kicked off its New York City Ice Cream Tour with a successful Brooklyn including stops in Downtown Brooklyn, Sunset Park, Prospect Lefters Gardens, and Greenpoint. They “passed out free ice cream, spread the word about the NY HEAT Act, and gathered over 100 signatures to let Governor Hochul know we need NY HEAT in the 2024 Executive Budget. Huge thank you to our elected officials Deputy Borough President Kim Council, Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, Assemblymember Jo Anne Simon, Assemblymember Marcela Mitaynes, Assemblymember Brian Cunningham, Senator Kristen Gonzalez, and Assemblymember Emily Gallagher for their participation and support. Stay tuned for future events this summer in Manhattan, Queens, and the Bronx, and use this tool below to let Governor Hochul know we need NY HEAT!”

Chicago to Pay for Electric Stoves, Heat Pumps for Lower-Income Homes – Karl Lydersen – Energy Network News – “The $15 million initiative will directly help residents who may not otherwise have the means to remove fossil fuel appliances from their homes…  The city recently issued a request for proposals for organizations to carry out the initiative, part of larger efforts to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions of buildings and curb the health and environmental justice impact of indoor gas pollution and escalating gas bills…Mayor Brandon Johnson, who took office in May, said in a statement that the investment ‘is just the beginning of our commitment to implementing a just energy transition for residents and workers in our city, particularly those hit first and worst by climate change.’ ” Tip from Peter Jensen at the National Building Electrification Network and Sunstone Strategies.  Article link here.

US DOE and NREL Researchers to Support Community-Scale Geothermal Projects in Selected Communities - US DOE - “Initiative Will Provide Up to $13 Million To Accelerate Deployment of Geothermal District Heating and Cooling Systems to Diverse Range of Communities Across U.S.” Here’s the description of the NY City project – “New York City, NY (Lead: Electric Power Research Institute)—Geothermal heating and cooling system to serve a minimum of 25% of apartments in a portfolio of 5,000 apartments identified for geothermal upgrades.” Thanks to NY-GEO member Paul Coons for this tip. Article link here.

California Incentives Reward Peak Demand Reductions – Jeff St. John – Canary Media – As we electrify our economy, the superior performance of geothermal heat pumps on the hottest and coldest days will be hugely valuable in maintaining grid resiliency and avoiding the expense of increasing grid capacity. This article details a recently implemented California “pay-for-performance” policy that rewards energy projects that provide those benefits. “These are not some subtle changes,…it’s a fundamental pivot from efficiency being a rebate program for insulation and better HVAC systems to energy efficiency as a baseload virtual power plant.” Article link here.

IPL’s Home Carbon Calculator – InterFaith Power & Light has produced a fairly sophisticated home carbon calculator that is quick, educational and fun to try. When filling it in, remember that they're probably using the obsolete 100-year time frame for methane emissions. If you’d like to bring the calculator in line with NY’s standard, try multiplying your natural gas input number by 1.8 before entering it. Calculator link here

Survey: Stanford Study Wants YOUR Input on Geothermal - NY-GEO hosted three students from Stanford University's TomKat Center for Sustainable Energy on last Friday's Let's Talk conversation.  The students are doing research hoping to better understand the issues that we face as geothermal professionals. The end goal of their research is to inform innovations that could alleviate roadblocks to widespread adoption of energy-efficient technologies, such as geothermal. We had a lively conversation on a few key topics, and they are hoping to hear from even more of you via a survey they’ve developed. All results will be aggregated and kept anonymous, and a summary of findings will be made available to NY-GEO. Everyone is invited to fill out this <5 minute survey to help inform change and innovations that could make our lives easier.

The ‘Future of Housing’ Has Arrived in All-Electric Colorado Developments - Sharon Sullivan – Colorado Newsline – “Grand Junction homebuilder Darin Carei decided to forgo a natural gas hookup to his Brookfield South Residential subdivision after learning the cost to bring in gas lines would be equal to installing solar panels on each of the houses that overlook the red-rock walls of Colorado National Monument in the distance. ‘We believe this is the future of housing,’ Carei said… Gov. Jared Polis in May signed Senate Bill 23-291, which eliminates incentives for installation of gas line extensions in new buildings and developments. Because utilities are no longer allowed to subsidize the expansion of the gas distribution system, all-electric homes and buildings will become more cost-effective, which could attract more developers and would save owners and tenants money on future energy costs,...” Tip from Peter Jensen at the National Building Electrification Network and Sunstone Strategies. New Jersey: $500 Million for Building Decarbonization New Jersey Board of Public Utilities – N.J. Governor Murphy signed an executive order in March setting a goal to electrify 400k homes and 20k businesses by 2030. Just last week, the state announced nearly $500 million in new funding for building decarbonization.  “BPU has proposed updates that reflect the reality of our climate future while maximizing energy savings and lowering costs.  Importantly, the newly proposed program allows customers who want to adopt high-efficiency electric home heating and cooling technology to make that switch, and to access their fair share of a huge pool of federal home efficiency and electrification incentives.  Through these programs, New Jersey utility customers will get money back into their pockets for switching to cleaner, greener home heating and cooling solutions.” Thanks to Olivia Prieto of RMI and the National Building Electrification Network for this tip.  NJBPU press release here.

Heat Spring Article & Video on Heat Pump Water Heaters – Heat Spring Magazine - The heat pump water heater market is a huge area for growth in the coming years. It’s estimated to grow from $1.6 billion in 2023 to $3.4 billion in 2033, at a rate of 7.9%. In July 2023, the US Department of Energy (DOE) proposed new energy efficiency standards for water heaters which they estimate will save Americans more than $11 billion annually on utility bills. The last time the DOE updated residential water heater efficiency standards was in 2010.  Article and video link here.

DiNapoli: State Needs to Supercharge Efforts to Meet Renewable Electricity Goals – New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli has released a 23-page report on the electricity generation challenges New York must meet in order to meet its legally mandated climate goals.  “ ‘New York State has rightly pursued an aggressive campaign to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to limit the most dangerous impacts of climate change,’ DiNapoli said. ‘New York’s energy goals are attainable, but require careful attention and management to address challenges, meet ambitious deadlines and avoid future pitfalls.’ DiNapoli’s report found that renewable generators in New York would need to produce an additional 78,073-gigawatt hours above 2022 levels, an increase of over 200%, to reach the CLCPA’s 2030 goal of 70% renewable electricity consumption.”  The report includes a short section on “Paying for the Transition” which includes the graph below.  Press release link here.

Another Take on Electric Panel Size – Alison F. Takemura - Canary Media – Last week we published a brief on a New Buildings Institute article that projected a 100-150 amp home electric panel, when accompanied by a “watt diet” might be enough to allow electrification of heating, cooking and clothes drying – at least in California. This article takes another look at electric panel size issues. “Experts generally agree that for most homes, 200 amps of electric current will be enough to electrify everything, while less than 100 amps won’t be. The middle of that range is trickier: If you have 100–150 amps, you might be able to get by without upgrades, or at least with potentially less costly updates — but it all depends on your home and goals.” Article link here.

The main circuit breaker — often located at the top of the panel — should show the total amps.

University Of Buffalo Rocks Sustainability/Climate Action – David J. Hill – University of Buffalo Sustainability – For the second year in a row, UB ranks second among U.S. colleges and universities in the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal 13: Climate Action, which measures universities’ research on climate change, their use of energy and their preparations for dealing with the consequences of climate change. The list includes 735 institutions from 93 countries/regions. In overall score, which combined rankings on 17 different criteria, UB ranked tied for 302nd internationally and was the highest ranked NY school and the 20th ranked U.S. school. Article link here.

Push For All-Electric in Australia – David Carroll – pv magazine – The Victorian government has announced a new $10 million (USD 6.7 million) grants program to provide bulk rebates for the installation of solar panels, solar hot water systems and heat pumps as part of plans for all new homes in the state to be 100% electric from 2024. The changes will apply to all new homes requiring a planning permit. Any future state government building will also be gas free. Commencing immediately, all new public buildings that haven’t reached design stage will also be all electric. Tip from Peter Jensen at the National Building Electrification Network and Sunstone Strategies. Article link here

Difficult Market for Long Duration Energy Storage - Eric Wesoff – Caray Media – “Azelio, a Swedish startup that aimed to supply thermal storage technology to long-duration energy storage applications, filed for bankruptcy last month… More than 50 startups are hammering away at LDES, and their technologies fall into four broad buckets: thermal, electrochemical, mechanical and geomechanical… The technologies are still difficult to tame and the markets are still undeveloped, but venture capitalists continue to pour money into the sector.” Article link here.

Building The Power Company Of The Future – Julian Spector – Canary Media - Climatetech entrepreneur Ryan Hanley’s new startup, Equilibrium Energy, has launched in Texas with an offer to pay battery owners for the right to bid their storage capacity into the wholesale markets. Hanley hopes this style of contract, called a “tolling agreement,” propels grid batteries into the mainstream. Hanley also has a broader vision. “Equilibrium’s task is to combine the best qualities of the world’s most innovative companies with the deep expertise of the energy and power-sector incumbents," Hanley said. Climate Updates:

Climate Litigation Is Exploding – Is It Making A Difference? – Katie Surma – Inside Climate News – The majority of climate cases (70% are in the U.S.) are filed by plaintiffs seeking outcomes aligned with goals under the Paris Agreement. Those suits are primarily aimed at holding governments accountable to their climate commitments, challenging governmental action or inaction with regard to emissions or adaptation to climate change, affecting corporate and investor behavior, and establishing liability primarily of fossil fuel companies for harm caused by the effects of climate change, such as extreme weather events. In Europe, strategic litigation has forced changes at the national level. In the U.S., a large portion of these cases are at the state and local level (perhaps due to the composition of the Supreme Court) and have enjoyed varying levels of success. Article link here.

Miami is Used to Heat, but Not Like This – Amy Green – Inside Climate News - “ ‘You just feel the thickness and heaviness of the air. You can’t even get that relief at 6 o’clock in the morning, and that is different,’ said Jane Gilbert, chief heat officer for Miami-Dade County… This summer is Miami’s hottest yet. During each of the past 14 years the average number of days with a heat index of at least 105 degrees Fahrenheit was six. This year there already have been more than 30 such days, and temperatures do not even peak here until August. By midcentury that number is projected to balloon to 88 days, or roughly three months of the year.” Article link here.

Scientists Study Impact of Prolonged Exposure to Wildfire Smoke - Megan Molteni – STAT – “ ‘Right now, we don’t have a good understanding of what the long-term effects of prolonged exposures to wildfire smoke are,’ said Ana Rappold, an epidemiologist at the Environmental Protection Agency. It’s a data gap she and other scientists are trying to fill. Research teams are looking at changes to lung function, cognition, and gene expression after smoke exposure and potential impacts on developing fetuses and infants, efforts that have taken on new urgency with recent events. ‘All the predictions have been saying there will be more smoke,' Rappold said. 'For those of us in this field, it’s a little bit scary to see what people have been talking about for years and years actually starting to happen here on the East Coast.’ ” Article link here.

Hip-Hop Meets Climate Action – Mike Munsell – Canary Media – Hit producer Corey Dennard is a co-founder of Klean Energy Kulture, a nonprofit production company that he recently started with Michael Hawthorne Jr., an environmentalist and political organizer. Dennard stated: “We make music, but at the same time, we integrate multimedia cultural campaigns where we partner with major brands, influencers, the top Billboard artists, and then climate organizations.” He hopes to activate hundreds of thousands of young adults, particularly in Black communities, to take climate action, whether by voting, commenting on regulatory filings or tweeting (xeeting?) at senators. Barbie Spoof with Darryl Hannah – Yes Men - You Tube – Film star Darryl Hannah announces Mattel will eschew plastic and release a Barbie Eco-Warrior line. Thanks to Isaac Silberman-Gorn, climate justice consultant, for this tip. Video link Here.

U.N. Head: Global Boiling Has Arrived – Michael J. Coren - Washington Post Climate Coach – “Last month previewed life on a more extreme planet… In Vermont, a single storm dropped two months of rain in 48 hours. Fires raged “like a blowtorch” across the Mediterranean. The waters off South Florida, driven by global sea surface temperatures experiencing two decades’ worth of warming in a single year, reached a blistering 101 degrees Fahrenheit. In the Phoenix metro area, millions sweltered under temperatures at or above 110 for more than four weeks, smashing U.S. records rivaled only by Death Valley, along the California-Nevada border. As El Niño supercharges human-driven warming, expect blowtorch conditions to continue at least until the end of the year. We may look back on July, the hottest month on record, as the moment when much of the world simultaneously felt the full fury of climate change for the first time. 'The era of global warming has ended,' U.N. Secretary General António Guterres declared Thursday. 'The era of global boiling has arrived.' ” Article link here.
