WKU to observe Veterans Day Thursday
WKU will observe Veterans Day at 11 a.m. Thursday with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Guthrie Bell Tower followed by the ROTC Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.

The Veterans Day ceremony will include remarks from Provost Robert “Bud” Fischer. (Note: In case of rain, the ceremony will be held in Downing Student Union, room 3005.)

The ROTC Hall of Fame Induction will begin at 11:30 a.m. in the Cupola Room of Fresh Food Company in Downing Student Union. The 2021 ROTC Hall of Fame Inductees are LTC (Ret.) Bill Pearson, LTC (Ret.) John Perkins and LTC (Ret.) William Willis.
Forensics Team wins events hosted by Eastern Illinois, Nebraska, Illinois State
The WKU Forensics program competed at four competitions in the past two weeks.

The team competed at The Online Asynchronous Tournament Series 2 hosted by Eastern Illinois University on Oct. 25-29. WKU was crowned team sweepstakes champions out of 48 competing universities including Eastern Michigan University, Truman State University and Ball State University. 

The team competed virtually in three different competitions Nov. 2-5, the Fall Redbird Debate Tournament hosted by Illinois State University and two individual event tournaments comprising the Harvest Festival hosted by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

At the Fall Redbird Tournament, WKU placed first ahead of Washburn University and Missouri State University. At the synchronous portion of the Harvest Festival Tournament, WKU placed first ahead of the University of Central Florida and Illinois State University. A smaller entry of WKU team members placed second at the Harvest Festival Tournament Alumni Asynchronous competition behind George Mason University.

The ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge awarded WKU the Silver Seal rating (60%-70% voter participation) for its work in student voter engagement during the 2020 presidential election. Learn More
Spotlight: Dr. Brittany Martin
Dr. Brittany Martin is the newest Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology and Criminology. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Georgia earlier this year. Her research displays a passion for exploring and identifying how nontraditional forms of punitive punishment impact people in the legal system.

Mary Ellen & Jim Wayne Miller Celebration of Writing
The WKU Department of English hosted the 25th annual Mary Ellen & Jim Wayne Miller Celebration of Writing on Oct. 31 at the Kentucky Museum.
English Department to host Undergraduate Conference
The WKU English Department will host the 2021 Undergraduate Conference on Literature, Language, and Culture on Friday. This event marks 20 years the WKU Department of English has hosted the conference, which provides a forum for undergraduate students to read and have their works shared that were written for their WKU English classes. The 2021 Undergraduate Conference on Literature, Language, and Culture will be held at 1:30 p.m. in Cherry Hall 125. The conference also will be available via Zoom.
Modern Languages recognizes retiring faculty members
The Department of Modern Languages gathered Nov. 3 to celebrate the work and recent retirement of Dr. Laura McGee, professor of German and former department head, and Dr. Karin Egloff, professor of French.
Mahurin Honors College hosts Nightmare on Normal Street
One of the most treasured aspects of The Mahurin Honors College (MHC) is its commitment to fostering community between scholars. In fact, the MHC hosts a student organization, the Honors Social Planning Board (HSPB), devoted to creating unique events that promote such fellowship. This Halloween, the HSPB organized a spooky event: The Nightmare on Normal Street. Scholars enjoyed pumpkin painting, trivia, a movie, and a costume contest.
