New SELHubs to Address Mental Health Needs of Students and Staff in Illinois

Schools are reporting that students, educators, and leaders have been experiencing increased levels of stress, anxiety, and trauma in recent months and the impact of these factors on the school and classroom environment is significant. The need for increased social and emotional support has been expressed by schools across the state.
In order to more comprehensively address the mental health needs of students and staff in Illinois, SEL Hubs have been formed across the state through an SEL and Trauma Response Grant from ISBE and as part of the ISBE Strategic Plan.

The SEL Hub will expand and extend efforts to identify and respond to trauma in our schools and to strengthen SEL programming. Our aim is to develop and implement a comprehensive and aligned plan to address the safety-related, trauma-related, and social emotional needs of students and staff in order to create more responsive and equitable schools and classrooms. Specifically, this grant will allow us to:

  • Assist schools with identifying their strengths and needs related to trauma responsive programming through participation in the TRS-IA self assessment tool
  • Support schools in action planning to become a more trauma responsive school
  • Foster educators’ personal and professional resilience and self-care
  • Create and provide supplemental professional learning opportunities related to SEL and Trauma

* The cost for the grant activities mentioned above will be paid by the grant and without fee to schools/districts participating.

As a school or district within DuPage County, you qualify to participate in the SEL Hub in Area 1. If you are interested in registering your school for participation in the trauma responsive school self assessment, or would like additional information about the SEL Hub activities, please contact Maureen McAbee or Sharon Frys.
