From the Desk of the Executive Director
It happens to me every year.
As I tap out my year-end thoughts, I start thinking back to the year we had, the year we enjoyed and the year we made happen for Manitoba Forage and Grassland Association (MFGA).

And it all goes back to you.

Because of you and your support in 2021, we had a great year. Even as weird as it was for all of us, we worked hard and we worked well together, often alongside others with like-minded focus. Among our 2021 highlights:

● MFGA worked diligently on partnerships, collaborations and projects that promote healthy soils, retain/improve grasslands, utilize cover crops, and deliver nature-based watershed benefits for and from producers on their lands.
● As a part of a provincial drought task force, MFGA helped do our part to discuss, strategize and broadcast federally and provincially-funded drought relief programs around a very impactful drought situation that caused a lot of anguish for producers in key livestock and forage-based areas of our province.
● To keep the momentum of regenerative agriculture rolling in Manitoba - while branding Manitoba and Prairie producers as regen ag leaders on a global, national and provincial front - we hosted a hybrid annual conference, allowing 300-plus delegates to select how they wanted to participate. By doing so, we stayed our course on providing a world-class agenda on the potential of regenerative agriculture - especially here in Manitoba and across the Prairies. This is especially important in Manitoba where our provincial government leaders have included regenerative agriculture in their strategic mapping plan for the Province’s Protein Strategy. We look forward to ongoing discussions and actions on this front in 2022.

Again, this all goes back to you and your support.

You should also know that as an organization, we added a new chair in Lawrence Knockaert, a new MFGA board executive rostered by Lawrence, Mike Duguid and Andrea Hamilton and we said goodbye to longtime MFGA stalwart Ryan Boyd who termed off our board. We added a MFGA Wall of Fame to recognize our past and help frame our future so that there is a benchmark of excellence that our volunteers can strive toward while respecting and understanding the work of those that have gone before them.

This is the world you have helped us achieve.

Our MFGA brand is driving forward. Our best work is because of your support.
Our sincere thanks to all of you.

We wish you and your families all a very Merry Christmas and the best in 2022.

Muchos Grasses,
Duncan Morrison, MFGA Executive Director
AgriRecovery: Herd Management Drought Assistance
This program assists livestock producers in offsetting the cost of replacing breeding animals, when culling is above normal because of winter feed shortages. If you are a producer, you may be eligible to apply for assistance to purchase replacement breeding females; to retain replacement females from their existing herd or flock. The replacement animals will help you return your inventory of breeding females to pre-drought levels. Read the program factsheet.

Hay Situation & Price Update
Prices and volumes of hay sale this past month have been limited and asking prices haven’t changed significantly from the November Report.

What is the Value of Hay Going to be this Year?

Pricing Protein and Energy Supplements and What is the Value of Hay going to be this Year? factsheets can provide some necessary information to help you determine which supplements may make the best economical sense.
Empty Grain Bags and Used Baler Twine Can Still be Recycled in Manitoba
There is still time for Manitoba farmers who have empty grain bags or used baler twine around the farm to tidy up and recycle them before the full onset of winter. These can include grain bags from previous years as long as farmers take steps to make sure they are free of grain and debris and rolled before bringing them to Cleanfarm collection sites. Directions for preparing grain bags and twine for recycling found here.
