June 24 Fruit Tree Pruning Class Opportunity with Plant Amnesty

When Plant Amnesty contacted us to ask if we were interested in partnering with them on a fruit tree pruning class, we said yes, please.

Join us on Saturday, June 24th at 2 p.m. and learn why your pruning strategies might be different when you prune for fruit production. This class will cover apple, cherry, plum, and pear trees. Figs and other fruits may be addressed as time permits.
Dormant season is a good time to prune many of our more common fruit trees, but summer pruning may be better for certain other fruits. Some particular pruning goals are also achieved more easily with selected summer pruning strategies. Learn what seasons are recommended for different goals. You will also learn how to train young fruit trees early so that they are primed for good structure and a productive life.

Taught in person by Ingela Wanerstrand. Registration and EA&G membership required. Click on the link below. It will take you to the registration page on Plant Amnesty's website. Purchase tickets as a non-member of Plant Amnesty and get a $5 discount by using the code eagfruit with the class description.
Fundraiser for Backyard Garden Renovation Continues
We're renovating the Backyard Garden, and we need your help to do it. This is one of the older gardens in the Arboretum, and time had taken its toll. Work began this spring when we had the old trees and shrubs removed, relocating them either to new homes in the Arboretum or to the plant sale.

As you can see in the conceptual drawing at right, the plan includes a large patio area designed to look like a crosscut tree stump and seating that will look like carved stone benches. The work will be done in several phases. We will take advantage of dry summer weather for the concrete work and hope to begin some planting in the fall once the rain returns, with more work happening in 2024.

This is a major project. Your donations will help make it a reality.
May 20 Work Party: What a Crew!

So many people turned out to help--both long-time volunteers and newbies. Brilliant orange geraniums got planted at the entrance to the Small Tree Walk, and at the main entrance to the gardens, people worked on the plant sale donations and sold some spring bloomers, soil was moved, shrubs saved from the Backyard Garden were planted around the kiosk and in the Conifer Garden, watering was done, and some weeds even got pulled.

The next work party is Wednesday, June 7 at 10 a.m. An added bonus for volunteers will be a pop-up sale of plants blooming right now. Bring cash and take home a treasure or two.
Exterior Decorating
Recently, Trevor Cameron brought his family to work in the Maple Grove and one of his boys left a sweet little "nest" of pine cones and an "egg." It might still be there for you to enjoy.
What better surprise on Mother's Day than visiting the Arboretum, walking by your sculpture--and finding a beautiful bouquet and all four of your daughters waiting to greet you. It was a happy day for board member and sculptor, Constance Jones.
An anonymous neighbor has been creating stone flowers in the Small Tree Walk. The soil there is full of rocks, so she's got plenty to choose from.
