From Mrs. Kunze
Happy Friday!

Please remember that Spring Break is Wednesday through Friday, March 17th - 19th this year. Students will attend classes on Monday and Tuesday, March 15th & 16th, and instruction will be occurring.

We will provide after school AP/IB testing for DL students on Monday and Tuesday, March 15th & 16th from 4:30pm to 5:30pm each day.

Thank you to the 125 parents who have completed the Annual SAC Needs Assessment Survey. We are required to have 20% of our parents complete, which is 618 surveys. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey as we truly value your feedback.

ALL grades were updated this past week as Wednesday marked the 1/2 way point for the 3rd quarter. If your child is struggling in a class, please reach out to the teacher first. Encourage your child to use EXCEL time wisely and to attend FREE after school tutoring with our National Honor Society students in the Media Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The Senior Class Officers have been working with senior sponsors to plan senior week, which will be the last week of April. We have fun dress-up days scheduled for each day and have added a fun game wih prizes to each day, along with a breakfast and lunch. We will share more details after spring break.

The St. Johns County School District continues to follow the Department of Health and CDC guidelines regarding mass gatherings. A dance/prom would be considered a mass gathering and will not be approved by the St. Johns County School District for this school year. Schools are working with students on potential alternatives to prom activities that will follow the DOH and CDC guidelines and be of interest to students.

Seniors – If you paid your senior dues by the t-shirt deadline, your shirts are here! To pick-up and sign for your shirt: Seniors with last names A – Manherz, See Ms. Bourquin in D007. Seniors with the last names Manley – Z, See Ms. Hurst in D023

A Reimagined GradBash is happening for Seniors! GradBash is now April 23, 2021 during normal park hours with general park attendees. We will depart Nease at 6:30 a.m. and return around 8:30 p.m. GradBash includes transportation, admission to both parks, a meal voucher, and a commemorative cup (free refills). If you have paid the deposit, a link will be available on SchoolPay to pay the balance ($40). If you have not paid and still want to go, there will be limited opportunity to pay in full ($140) for the remaining spots. Your senior dues MUST be paid first. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY NEWS!
ALL JUNIORS will have a club meeting on Wednesday, March 10th during Excel A & B. It is imperative that ALL Juniors attend this meeting as there will be a great deal of important information regarding summer service hours, kicking off another club fundraiser, and officer elections for the 2021-22 school year. All Juniors were informed of this important meeting weeks ago and were asked to work their schedules around this date and time, so all are expected to attend. DL students will receive meeting info later that evening.

Night of One Acts
Got plans next Friday night March 12th @ 6:30pm? Join us for an evening of four one act plays performed and directed by students of the Nease Theatre Department; Stranded: Views from Quarantine is a unique collection of monologues written by various well know playwrights at the start of the COVID pandemic from the fictitious accounts of individuals that were stranded out at sea on a cruise ships around the world. The Other Room is a compelling and sensitive glimpse into a unique and misunderstood mind. Dark Road is a powerful drama about the choices that allow evil to become ordinary. Then we will close the evening with A Murdered Mystery a play-within-a-play opens with the butler, holding a gun, standing over the body of Steve Walters. But this is not what it seems and it’s not a simple case of “the butler did it.” Don’t miss these amazing student directed one acts. Seating is limited so all tickets must be purchased in advance. Tickets are $7 and are available on School Pay here https://www.schoolpay.com/pay/for/Night-of-Student-Directed-ONE-ACTS/SdIXBME
The St. Johns County School District (SJCSD) has recently implemented the eSchoolPLUS Family Mobile App for parents/guardians. This mobile app allows parents to see many of the Home Access Center (HAC) features from their mobile phone.  This application uses the same login credentials as Home Access Center (HAC).

Here is what the eSchoolPlus Family app looks like in the app store (Apple or Google):
Here are some of the key academic areas displayed by this mobile app:
·        Student grades
·        Attendance
·        Assignments
·        Report Card and Progress Reports
·        Schedule
·        Transportation
·        Notifications
In addition, we discovered that some parents were using other untrusted 3rd party mobile apps to provide similar data pulled from our system by providing them with their personal HAC credentials. This can be dangerous because, the District has no connection or affiliation with these other vendor apps. By providing them with your credentials, you have granted them access to your child’s personal academic data. If this is the case, we recommend you remove the 3rd party app from your phone and then change your password in HAC. Then download and use the new eSchoolPLUS Family app (shown above).
PLEASE check to see if your child can answer any of the following questions each morning. If yes, please keep them home, so they are not spreading germs.

Student Health Screening Entry Form
Please assess your child daily for the following symptoms and answer the contact questions.
• Fever of 100.4 or higher
• Uncontrolled cough
• Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
• Sore throat
• Loss of sense of smell or taste
• Muscle aches
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Is your child currently awaiting COVID-19 test results? If yes, please keep your child home and notify the school nurse when test results received. Further instructions will be discussed at that time.
• Does your child live in the same household with someone positive for COVID-19? If yes, your child must quarantine for 10 days from the last date of contact with the positive individual. The quarantine period may be shortened to as few as 7 days if a negative PCR test result is obtained on day 6 or later from exposure to the positive case. The Dept. of Health will assist in clearing your child to return to school once they have received the negative test result.

FROM THE DISTRICT OFFICE REGARDING NEW GUIDELINES FOR QUARANTINING
Beginning 12/9/2020
The CDC and the Florida Department of Health continue to recommend quarantine for 14 days from the date of exposure. However, there is new guidance that allows for a close contact to return to school earlier. There are two options that may allow the close contact to return to school/work before the full 14-day quarantine period has been met:
  1. The quarantine period may be shortened to 10 days from last exposure to the positive case if daily symptom monitoring indicates the close contact remains symptom free. The contact can return to school or work on Day 11. HOWEVER, it is extremely important that the contact continues daily monitoring for signs and symptoms through 14 days, as well as, practice social distancing, always wears a mask, and washes hands frequently. If signs or symptoms develop at any point, the contact should immediately isolate, seek medical care, and call the Health Department.
  2. The Quarantine may be shortened to as few as 7 days if a negative PCR test result is obtained on day 6 or later from exposure to the positive case. A PCR test is required and a rapid antigen test CANNOT be substituted. The test must be collected on day 6 or after, and if it is negative, the contact can return on Day 8 of quarantine, if he or she remains symptom free.
FAQs:
DO I HAVE TO GET MY CHILD TESTED?
No, assuming your child remains symptom-free, he or she does not need a negative test to return to school on Day 11. If they develop symptoms you should seek medical care and call the health department.
HOW DO I GET PCR TESTING?
  • You can obtain PCR testing through your medical provider
  • You can obtain PCR testing at a public testing site
  • REMEMBER: the rapid antigen test is not accepted, it must be a PCR test
  • If your child develops symptoms, seek medical care and call the Health Department
  • Make sure results can be provided within 24 to 48 hours. If the results are likely to take longer than 48 hours, it may be better to quarantine through day 10 and return to school on day 11, if no symptoms. CHILDREN WITH A KNOWN PENDING TEST RESULT SHOULD NOT RETURN TO SCHOOL
IF I GET A NEGATIVE PCR TEST RESULT, OBTAINED ON OR AFTER DAY 6 FOLLOWING EXPOSURE, WHAT IS THE NEXT STEP?
Call the Health Department to check if the result has been reported electronically in their system. If the result is reported, they will let the school know that your child may return, assuming they remain asymptomatic. If you have been notified that the result is negative but it has not yet shown up in the DOH system, you will need to provide a copy of the lab directly to the Health Department. NOTE: Please DO NOT fax or drop off copies of labs without first contacting the Health Department to make appropriate arrangements.

We will provide after school AP/IB testing for DL students on Monday and Tuesday, March 15th & 16th from 4:30pm to 5:30pm each day.

A message from the St. Johns County School District:
Florida Department of Education does not allow districts to provide a virtual testing option for the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA), Florida Standards Alternative Assessment (FSAA), or EOC’s for the 2020-2021 school year. According to the state Department of Education, “We are not considering remote proctoring or at-home testing for any of Florida’s K-12 summative or postsecondary assessments in 2020-21”.
The Florida Department of Education has in the past stated that by statute, “Participation in the assessment program is mandatory for all school districts and all students attending public schools…”.
St. Johns County School District does not have the statutory authority to exempt any student from required, state developed assessments, except as specified in Section 1008.212, F.S. which primarily addresses students with physical impairment or children who have a medical complexity as defined in Section 1008.22(9) F.S.

The following week at Flagler Palm Coast Hannah Sutter set a new school record in the discus throwing 129-5. Anderson Ball won the 1600m in 4:15 setting a new meet record. Rheinhardt Harrison set a new meet record and school record in the 800m running 1:52. News from the Visual Arts Teachers:
We are proud to announce the students listed below are representing the Visual Arts department for the All-County Art Show. The exhibition will be held at St. Augustine Art Association (STAAA) at 22 Marine Street in Downtown St. Augustine. The dates are March 5th, 2021 to March 29, 2021. The gallery is open to the public 1-4pm Monday through Friday. The STAAA will have special hours from 5:00PM – 7:30PM on Friday March, 5th, 2021. This coincides with the First Friday Art Walk downtown. If you’re unfamiliar with Art Walk, it is held the first Friday of every month. During Art Walk, St. Augustine's renowned art galleries open their doors and welcome visitors to browse the latest art exhibits at some 30 participating galleries. This cooperative open house showcases the amazing variety of artwork represented in St. Augustine’s fine art galleries, from contemporary to traditional and everything in between, created by local and national artists working in oils, pastels, photography, ceramics, wood, textiles, metal, and much more.
Due to the current COVID restrictions, the traditional reception and awards ceremony, hosted by St. Johns County School District, will not take place this year. The STAAA will videotape recognition of this years’ winners and they will announce the student winners and their corresponding recognition of honor and show their artwork. The video will be shared on the St Augustine Art Association website and the St Johns County School District website.

Summer Internship Resumes Are Due March 11th
Current Juniors in the Communications, Hospitality, and Engineering Academies who turned in their completed Summer Internship applications on Wednesday, February 24th are now in the next phase of the process: Resume Writing. Students received information on the resume requirements at the meeting held during Excel A on the 24th. Students have until March 11th to turn in their professional resumes to qualify for the next step in the Internship process. There are two ways to submit the final resume by the March 11th due date:
  1. Email to Mrs. Combs at Jaime.combs@stjohns.k12.fl.us (make sure to spell her first name correctly)
  2. Drop off your resume at the front desk, make sure to attach a post-it or paperclip on a note that says it is for Mrs. Combs
Once resumes are received, they are sent to the district CTE office along with the student applications for approval. Following that, students will receive information on the last stages of the process: the interviews. Students will take part in a practice interview virtually and receive feedback on their interviewing skills. Then, placement for internships will begin either by business partners selecting an intern from the resumes, or by interviewing applicants and making their selections.

Bright Futures- SENIORS ACT NOW!
As we approach the end of the first semester, we want to encourage any students who are still holding on to community service hours to get those turned in to their counselor ASAP. Students who meet all of the qualifications and apply prior to the end of the first semester have the opportunity to “lock-in” the scholarship at that time. Students who do not meet the qualifications yet can continue to earn community service hours until graduation day. Students have until the June SAT and ACT test dates to continue to try and earn the required test scores.

The application typically takes 10 minutes or less to complete. Students DO NOT need to have met the requirements prior to applying for the scholarship. As a reminder, students need qualifying GPA, SAT or ACT, and Community Service Hours in order to earn the scholarship. Any student that meets those requirements and applies will earn the scholarship.

In order to apply for State Scholarship & Grant Programs (Bright Futures), a student must first  Create a Student Account/Profile at the following link: http://www.floridastudentfinancialaid.org/ . Click on State Grants, Scholarships & Applications. Click on Create a Student Account.   Students will receive an email with their User ID and temporary password. After creating a Profile, students will have the option to continue directly to the FFAA.

Dual Enrollment Update

  •  Summer Registration:
  • The Summer Schedule is now live on the SJR website! https://web.sjrstate.edu/apex/prod/f?p=132:1:::NO:::
  • SJR will not start processing summer registrations until March 1st , however, you can go ahead and submit summer registrations to the portal at this time.
  • Remember: All documents get uploaded to the portal link located the Resources>SJR Registration Resources tab in Schoology. You will need your HAC login and password to access it. The registration form can be downloaded from Schoology or from the portal.
  • MAC USERS: It’s easiest if you print your docs, and then take a picture and upload the picture to the portal.
  • Don’t forget to check the prerequisites for the courses you want to take!
  • If you are taking SJR classes this semester, you do not have to apply to the college again! Also, DON’T join the “Prospective DE Students” Schoology group! This is for BRAND new students!
  • Need a refresher on how to register? There is a registration video located in our Schoology group in the updates and then I will also put it in the “Resources”> “SJR Registration” resources folder.
  •  Test scores:
  • If you submitted PSAT Scores last summer under the COVID testing allowances to qualify you for ENC1101 or MAC 1105, and you took those courses, then you do not need to resend any test scores to the portal.
  • If you submitted PSAT scores, but only took one of the courses requiring qualifying scores, you will need to submit test scores to qualify you for the course you want to take. (Ex: You submitted scores for ENC1101 and took the course, however, your score did not qualify you for MAC1105, you will need to test and submit your scores with your registration in order to take that course.)
  • If you submitted PSAT scores under the COVID testing allowances, but did not qualify for either course and you would like to take them, you will need to take the PERT/SAT/ or ACT and submit the qualifying scores to the portal when you register.
  • The testing score card is attached to this email so you can see what scores are required to take each course.
