Recreating and Remembering

As we move from the busiest months to the vacation months, as we move from the height of the pandemic to a less viral mess, it is good to be reminded of the power of recreation. In the United States of America we have the fewest guaranteed vacation time then any other country in the industrialized world, so when we do take our time off from work we really do need to make the most of it!
The root word “create” denotes a sense of artistry and newness, a making of something that has not been seen or experienced before. “Creation” then is something inherently new. God created the heavens and the earth. Something that had never been seen or experienced before. God promises us that God will make us a new creation through our baptisms. We then are someone new, someone no one else has experienced before.

Thank you, thank you to all the thoughtful people of First Lutheran Church who helped make my 100th birthday on April 1st such a joyful occasion. A “ committee”, long before I woke up on the 1st, decorated my front gate and living room with 100 balloons.
Gifts, cards, photos, telephone calls and visits—I am still enjoying these.
I wish I could thank you all in person.
I thank the Lord for Blessings of a long life, and I will ask the Lord to Bless all of you.

Please note that all people entering the FLC building or using the parking lot for meetings must complete a temperature check and wear a mask that covers the nose and mouth. Do You Still Want Offering Envelopes?
As more and more congregants are moving to bill pay services and online giving, the Finance Committee is auditing giving envelope use. If you have been receiving giving envelopes and no longer feel you have a need for them, please let the church office know at 425-486-2314 or by email by June 7th.

Women's Bible Study & Fellowship opportunities available:
Deborah: June 8, 10:30 am on Zoom. Everyone is invited to join as we explore session 1, Just Wisdom, part of of a three session Bible study inspired, in part, by Jesus proclamations. (Sessions 2 and 3 will be studied in July and August.)
Rebecca Circle: June 17, 10 am on Zoom. Everyone is welcome!

Men’s ONLINE Breakfast and Bible Study via Zoom!
Saturday, June 19, 9 – 10:15 am.
Come join other men from the congregation and community online for breakfast and conversation! There will be food for the body, food for the soul and food for thought! A group of 11 men attended the April 2021 online breakfast. Please join us from the comfort of your own home for discussion and enrichment.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL AGES

Monday, July 26 – Thursday, July 29, 9 AM to Noon
All children ages 3 through 6th Grade are invited to attend. Registration will open in early June. We are excited to hold in person Vacation Bible School! Please watch for more information.

IN Person Outdoor Youth Group Event at the Coble family's home in Brier
Saturday, June 5, 3 - 5 pm.
All Youth (Grades 6 - 12) are invited to attend. Plans include an outdoor gathering (physically distanced and wearing masks) with games, time for catching up and enjoying some s'mores around their fire pit. We will continue to monitor the State COVID health directives and guidelines.
The FLC bus will provide transportation to and from the church at 2:30 pm. We will return to FLC at 5:30 pm.
We are hoping for a beautiful day! This will be our first in person youth event since February 2020!

Discussion Book: No-No Boy, by John Okado

Discussion Leaders: Ann & Dan Bormann
"John Okada was born in Seattle, Washington in 1923. He attended the University of Washington and Columbia University. He served in the US Army in World War II, wrote one novel and died of a heart attack at the age of 47. John Okada died in obscurity believing that Asian America had rejected his work.
In this work, Okada gives the perspective of a no-no boy, a Japanese-American man who would neither denounce his Japanese heritage nor fight for the U.S. Army during WWII. This novel takes place after the main character spent two years in a Japanese internment camp, and two years in prison after saying no when asked to join the U.S. Army. Okada's novel No-No Boy shows the internal and external struggles fought by Japanese-Americans in that time period, be they no-no boys or not." (From goodreads.com)

These are anxious and trying times for all of us. Physical distancing has changed how First Lutheran provides mission and ministry. We are all eager to have worship and all ministries return to normal.
What has not changed are the expenses for mission and ministry. Thank you to all who have continued their faithful giving.

Note: there is a one time fee to FLC for the set up of bank to bank transactions. There are approximately 3% transaction fees on all credit card donations, making credit card and debit card giving more effective if combined into a monthly transaction, rather than smaller amounts, weekly.

This is an excellent time to set up Shop with Scrip and Presto Pay for instant Scrip purchases and redemption on your smart phone. This is a super easy way to continue to support FLC's Scrip program. (See below for more information.)
Additionally, while worship is being celebrated virtually, you may mail a check to FLC Scrip, attention Gordy Phelps, with a note of what scrip cards you wish to purchase, and he will mail the cards back to you.

Dale Oliver has notified the church office that her mother, long time member, Mary Ann Oliver passed away in Sedona, Arizona on May 2. No service is planned at this time.

After 14 years of providing shelter to people who are unhoused in North King County with the support of many community partners via the Lake City Taskforce on Homelessness, Lake City Partners 501c3 is pleased to announce that we have transitioned our winter shelter to a 24/7 Enhanced Shelter at The Oaks in Shoreline. The Oaks will serve 60 unhoused single adults and couples with pets - more than double the number of people that were served during this past Winter Shelter season. Rather than move from location to location and only being open at night and in the winter, this new 24/7 location will be a springboard for residents to move into permanent housing. We are so grateful to be able to create privacy and safety for people as they will have their own rooms at this new location.
