Read: Psalm 36:5-10

For with you is the fountain of life;

    in your light we see light.

Psalm 36:9

My dad was career Army so we moved throughout my childhood every couple of years. He was reserved and loving, but when he said jump, we did. Yet, I never doubted his great love for my mom, my brother and for me. It was a constant in a kaleidoscope of different places, schools and people. His steadfast love, along with my mother’s, laid a foundation for beginning to grasp the idea that God loved me, too, and everybody else. Always had; always would…another constant.

Even in the painful doubts and awkward searching of my teen years, my father listened without nay-saying, but with love. He told me that while I might have doubts, God did not, and that God loved me through my wandering and He honored a sincere desire to know Him. I still remember how reassuring that was to hear, that God’s steadfast love and care for me did not depend on my own wandering love during those days.

As these verses from Psalm 36:5-10 celebrate how precious and active God’s steadfast love is for us, we see His love extending beyond our limited sight, giving refuge, providing abundance. Then in verse 9, with the Psalmist, we discover that with God “is the fountain of life; in your light we see light.” At Advent, we reflect on the depth of God’s steadfast love in giving us His Son to show us the way of hope, peace, joy and love, itself. In today’s Psalm, we see that His star still provides the guiding light we seek today.
