News & Updates from DKT

September 2022

Dear Friend of DKT,

A core value at DKT centers around impact at scale. In this newsletter, you can read several stories that demonstrate this idea.

In Sudan, Chad, Niger, and Chile, DKT launched new products. Despite severe economic and political challenges, we kept products on the shelves with steady sales in Afghanistan and Myanmar. And, for a view into the impact of social marketing, once again, check out the 2021 Social Marketing Statistics Report, which highlights the many achievements social marketing organizations made throughout the past year.

Read on about how our team in West Africa contributed to a peer-reviewed study of how DKT’s call center helps women navigate and reduce abortion stigma. We are also pleased to share DKT’s key financials and hope that this information is of use to you and your teams around the world.

Cheers,

Christopher Purdy

Expanding access to reproductive health products in Africa and Latin America

We are pleased to share that we recently launched several new products in Africa and South America. In Sudan, we resumed sales of Fiesta condoms after a 10-year absence, having had our operations unceremoniously shuttered by the previous government (other products will follow soon). In Chad and Niger, countries with high rates of unmet need for contraception, DKT teams have begun selling condoms, IUDs, Manual Vacuum Aspiration technology, and contraceptive implants. And in Chile, we initiated sales of DKT’s proprietary Postpil emergency contraceptive brand.

DKT resumes operations in Afghanistan

When the Taliban took over in Afghanistan a year ago, the future of sexual and reproductive health programs and services was uncertain, and DKT was forced to halt operations. After several months of tumult, DKT is proud to have successfully resumed work in Afghanistan. In the past few months, DKT has conducted training for private sector midwives on IUD insertion and removal. We’ve also sold 4 million condoms, 41,000 IUDs, 800 implants, 110,000 injectables, 450,000 units of oral contraception, 85,000 units of emergency contraception, and 500 Manual Vacuum Aspiration kits.

DKT publishes 3rd, peer-reviewed paper of 2022, shares knowledge from the field

DKT’s work in French West Africa was featured in a recent peer reviewed article in the journal Sexual Reproductive Health Matters. Co-authored by a DKT team member, the article examines how DKT’s call centers help women navigate and reduce abortion stigma limiting access to quality information and care in the West Africa region.

Other, peer-reviewed articles DKT has published in 2022 include a piece in Social Marketing Quarterly in March with condom market case studies in three countries and a discussion in the International Journal of Arts, Humanities and Social Studies from January/February making the case for unlocking the private sector’s potential to deliver sexual and reproductive health to communities around the world. These form part of the effort by DKT International to better share and communicate the lessons learned from our experience in the field

DKT International Key Financials

DKT is committed to transparency and is pleased to share key financial highlights from our 2021 audit financial statements. This past year, DKT offset total expenses of $257 million (red) across 100+ countries with $193 million (blue) in revenue from the sale of our affordable sexual and reproductive health portfolio. This represents a sustainability ratio of 75%, positioning DKT well against our goal of reaching 90% financial stability by 2030. The organization also received $60.6 million in critical donor funding (green).

We are proud to report that DKT’s headquarters costs accounted for only 1.36% of total expenses and our global fundraising costs were less than 0.2%. This is a testament to DKT’s ability to remain highly efficient and decentralized with a small HQ office of only 13 people.

For a more detailed breakdown of the sales and CYPs generated in each country, check out the 2021 Cost and Results report here. You can also access the full 2021 audit.

ICFP announces Phil Harvey SRHR Innovation Award

The International Conference on Family Planning (ICFP) is searching for a new generation of reproductive health changemakers to apply for the Phil Harvey SRHR Innovation Award. Named after DKT’s founder, the award encourages young leaders to follow in Harvey’s footsteps by submitting a bold, rights-based project proposal that leverages the private sector to support sexual health and wellbeing. Anyone between the ages of 18 and 35 who currently lives and works in a low and middle income country can apply for the chance to receive up to $10,000 to implement their proposed project and attend the upcoming ICFP conference in Thailand this November. Three winners will be selected.
