Cady Mountain Preserve Addition: An Island Within an Island

In the heart of San Juan Island, the Cady Mountain Preserve Addition provides an important refuge for wildlife—an island within an island. As part of one of the largest contiguous conservation areas in the San Juan Islands, the 142-acre preserve addition expands upon multiple square miles of uninterrupted territory, where deep-forest species can thrive.

Nature Note: Why plant a non-native mustard in Island Marble Butterfly habitat patches?

We recently received a question from an astute social-media follower about why we use a non-native plant species (field mustard, or Brassica rapa) in habitat-expansion patches for the Island Marble Butterfly, when another member of the brassica family that is native to our region (Lepidium virginicum, aka Menzies’ pepperweed) was present in the butterfly’s historic habitat.

It’s a great question, and we thought we’d share some thoughts on the topic. ...

Male Western Bluebird eating worm | David Finholm watercolor sketch from a photo by Kathy Finholm

Kathy and David Finholm of San Juan Island are dedicated volunteers for the Preservation Trust’s Western Bluebird Project. They teamed up this spring to capture this image of a hungry bluebird. Kathy photographed the bird eating a worm, then David transformed her photo into a pen and watercolor sketch.

“The bluebird had just grabbed the worm from the ground and landed on a fencepost to eat,” David said. “Both a male and female were perched on a fence wire. The male dove down to get the worm on the ground, then swooped up to the post and gobbled it. Great shot, Kathy!”
