Pre-Order Someone Builds the Dream
ON SALE 3/23/21
"Someone had to make THIS book,
Someone had to build this dream."
— Lisa Wheeler, Someone Builds the Dream

This month, all of us at Cellar Door became enthralled with a picture book. Someone Builds the Dream lovingly illustrates the many hands that go into making the things of our world, from homes to bridges to sculptures to books. It made us feel hopeful that we could each do our part, and that we could, in this hope, appreciate all the others also doing their part. Gorgeous illustrations take us from designs and plans to builders and workers, demonstrating to our children the way the things we love and rely on come to be.
Bridging the divide between laborers and engineers, welders and artists, printers and authors, this picture book makes people who have been sidelined by society and in popular culture visible. It also revises the historical narrative of how we built this country, and who built this country, with its illustrations. We all need a positive vision for what this world actually looks like, and the teamwork that has built everything that surrounds us. Perhaps with this blueprint, we can begin to move forward.
December Staff Picks
The Home Place by J. Drew Lanham: If the outdoors feeds your soul, but you've wondered at the lack of human diversity found on the trails, read this. Edgefield County, South Carolina held such opportunity for a boy whose greatest joy was found in the woods he explored, but being the descendent of slaves in the 1960s south had another set of obstacles, and Lanham weaves these two worlds together with unflinching honesty and power. How much richer our outdoor experiences will be when the diversity we so appreciate in the outdoors is reflected in those with whom we hike and share the awe.
- Linda
Reproduction by Ian Williams: This dazzling fiction debut by poet Ian Williams won Canada’s major fiction prize in 2019. Set in the suburbs of Toronto, Reproduction follows the grief-borne, bickering, near- non-relationship between a German heir and a Caribbean student in the 1970s, to the next generation in the 1990s, and finally to the present. Touching and funny, this stylistically inventive novel moves quickly because of its lively prose and the voices of its flawed, lovable characters. Like Zadie Smith’s White Teeth — a comic, multicultural novel of our times. - Liz
The Sea in Winter by Christine Day (on sale 1/5/21): When we meet Maisie, she has no friends outside of her ballet classes, which she can no longer attend due to a knee injury. She can't focus in school, and her grades are suffering. She's keeping secrets from a loving family that doesn't seem to understand what she's going through. She's hurting... and still putting one foot in front of the other. This book is about finding strength in coming to terms with change. It's about asking for help. It's about loneliness and other hard emotions I think adults forget children can go through. And it's a beautiful, hopeful revelation of a story. - Karen
