Student Spotlight: Amber Garcia

Q: What is your favorite course you have taken in the college?

My favorite course so far has definitely been Human Physiology (BIOL-2124) with Dr. Eric Bright. While it was the most difficult class I think I have taken in college, I loved learning about the ways countless chemical receptors work in harmony to help different systems within our bodies run smoothly simultaneously. I learned to appreciate the complexity of how our everyday bodily functions work, and even with so much content I know we only scraped the surface. This class really strengthened my desire to learn more about health.

Q: What do you love about the college?

My favorite thing about the Dodge Family College of Arts and Sciences is the community of people I have been able to meet. With the college being so large and full of extremely different majors, I have had the opportunity, especially through the Withrow Leadership Scholars Program, to talk with people that have interests and passions completely different than mine. Whether it be history, art or social sciences, it is really nice to not be confined to a biological science bubble and to learn from other people.

Q: How has the college prepared you for life after college?

The faculty and staff within the college have played an extremely important role through my academic journey. Many of them have taken the time to talk with me and give me the advice and resources necessary to succeed past graduation, and come up with a plan to be able to do the work that I desire to do. They have helped me realize my own potential and develop the confidence to run towards my goals. Not only have they helped develop me in a professional setting, but they have also helped me realize that while work and academics will always be an important component in my life, it is important to remember to cultivate and pour into the community of people around me and be present in the life I live. I will forever be so appreciative for their guidance and genuine care.

Q: What are you best study tips?

The best study tip I can give is to remember that you must take care of your brain in order to use it!!! I think when it comes to studying, a lot of students, myself included, forget to prioritize our mental and physical well-being. Skipping a meal or giving up some hours of sleep to get an assignment done may help you meet a deadline, but over time you won't be able to produce the quality of work you are most capable of because you will get worn out. Make the time to take care of yourself and remember why you're here! We can say we are all busy but from what I have learned we always make time for what is important to us, so let's view self love as a top priority more often.

Faculty Spotlight: Becky Barker

IMG_9142.jpg

Becky Barker has worked at the University of Oklahoma since 1991. She currently serves as the director of Leadership and Volunteerism where their mission is to empower students to become effective leaders and engaged citizens. Becky Barker also teaches an organizational leadership class, a higher education practicum and a Life After OU class – a course designed for graduating seniors. One of her favorite activities is facilitating team-building activities for corporate and nonprofit organizations. She has also been featured as part of the Leadercast Video Series providing leadership insights and solutions from leaders around the world.

Why should students take the Life After OU course? What knowledge and experience do they gain?

I have taught the Life After OU course for a few years now. One of my favorite things about the class is to see students gain an understanding of the topics covered in the course. Each week experts (mostly OU alumni) visit the class to share their expertise about basic finances regarding budgeting and investing, personal taxes, employee benefit packages, health and life insurance, repaying student loan debt, transitioning to a full-time job, personal growth and legal information such as advance directives and wills. The key objective of this class is to “remove the scary” that we so often feel regarding these subjects that can be somewhat overwhelming. This class teaches you the basic information and where to go when you are ready to learn more. This class also exposes you to exercises that help you to develop skills in staying tuned in to your career path or to help you formulate one.

What does the course content consist of?

The course meets only one day a week for a couple of hours and includes guest lecturers. The course is graded S/U so it counts as a 3-hour elective, but does not impact your GPA. Life After OU utilizes three books that most students choose to keep and refer to long after the class ends. The books are Designing Your Life: How to Build a Well-Lived, Joyful Life; Life After College, and 52 Weeks of Prosperity – a book written by a local financial planner who visits our class at the beginning of the semester and the end of the course. Each week, students have assigned readings and videos, exercises, and discussion posts.

Following are quotes that students submitted via their course evaluation.

“I am so thankful someone recommended this class to me. It has been so beneficial. I wish I could have taken it more than one semester. I absolutely love the way you have it set up. You have great speakers that teach us so many things that we need to know. I loved all of the books that you had us read. They were so beneficial. I have already recommended these books to so many people. Thank you for a great semester.”

“Overall this has been one of the most beneficial courses that I have taken during my time at OU. It has really encouraged me to seriously think about what is important to me. All the exercises in the Designing Your Life book were all very helpful ways to organize my thoughts and think about the options I have for my future in the professional world. It has been a therapeutic course with great input from our guest speakers and fellow students. Now that my time at OU has come to an end, I will take what I have learned in this course with me and apply to my future endeavors.”

Many students say this course should be required for all graduating seniors. The content is focused on developing life skills that will serve you well in every season of your future.
