Sea King Sunday Update

Dear Sea King Families,

I hope everyone is enjoying this first weekend in June! As I'm getting ready today to head up to campus for our Senior Awards event, I am thinking about all that we have accomplished this year as a Sea King community! There has been great success in our classrooms with amazing teaching from our esteemed faculty! Our students' achievements in our signature programs, extracurriculars, and community activities have been off the charts! The PVHS student-athletes have experienced amazing success in their sports seasons and they have been celebrated with awards and accolades. Our Class of 2023 has knocked it out of the park with their college admissions and they are going off to amazing places across the US and beyond. Check out this fantastic interactive college map of our Class of 2023!

There is so much to celebrate about this school year and I congratulate our kids on their personal accomplishments, both big and small! PVHS would not be the place that it is without our dedicated faculty and staff and I am lucky to work beside them each day. Our school is also supported by our families and community members who do so much to make this a special place for our kids. As we head into this final week of school, I want to thank all members of our Sea King family for making this a phenomenal school year! Our annual Lip Dub debuted this week and continues to highlight all of our programs at PVHS. There is a link below so you can check it out!

The finals schedule for this week is below for your reference. Please note the special schedule tomorrow with the zero-period final at 7:30 am and then first-period classes beginning at 9:30 am.

We are almost at the finish line Sea Kings. Let's end the year strong and enjoy this final week of the school.

Sincerely,

Dr. Trista Ramirez

Principal

Congratulation to all our senior scholarship winners!

Congratulations to juniors Natalie Wang and Christine Xie for winning two very special STEM awards.

Natalie Wang led the FRC (First Robotics) design team, using Autodesk Inventor CAD software to design the PVIT robot and will be the FRC team captain next year. Natalie was recognized with University of Rochester’s Xerox Award for Innovation and Information Technology.

Christine Xie was one of three PVHS students to qualify for the AIME (American Invitational Math Exam) this year, which represents the top 300 students of the 300,000 students who took the AMC (American Mathematics Competition) ie. the top of the top, and continues to knock it out of the park with her science research. Christine was awarded the Rensselaer Medal from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for her exceptional math and science endeavors.

Both awards also involve a very generous scholarship to the sponsoring schools if the girls are accepted and choose to attend there.

Congratulations to both of these exceptional STEM students!

The PVHS and Peninsula High School Ethnic Studies Classes took their final field trip of the school year to Bruce's Beach! Our students have been able to take field trips this semester to connect their curriculum with museums and historical locations in our local area. A special thank you to Ms. Varela for all of her planning to make these learning opportunities happen for our kids!

Registration closes on Friday, June 2nd at 5pm.

Please view the flyer below and go to pvpss.com for details. Also, feel free to contact help@pvpss.com with any questions/concerns, as we're always glad to help.

Biology Honors Pilot Textbook Update

During this past school year, the high school Biology Honors course piloted the following curricular materials to align with the California state standards:

1st semester (August – December 2022) pilot textbook:

Science Dimensions Biology. The Living Earth. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2020.

2nd semester (January 2023 – March 2023) pilot textbook:

Mader, Sylvia and Windelspecht, Michael. Essentials of Biology, 6th Edition. McGraw Hill Education, 2021.

Throughout the pilot, information was posted on the district website for the school community to review and publisher materials were on display at the district office and available at the school for public preview.  In addition, parents of students in the pilot courses had the opportunity to provide feedback via survey at the conclusion of the pilot period.

After thorough evaluation, teaching, and analysis of the pilot textbooks, teachers and staff recommended McGraw Hill Education’s Essentials of Biology, 6th Edition, 2021, for adoption.

However, the publisher recently informed PVPUSD that the 6th edition (along with its digital components) would be replaced with a 7th edition making the 6th edition cost prohibitive.  The publisher also stated that they could not guarantee access to the 6th edition’s digital materials for the duration of the adoption.

As such, our teachers have reviewed the 7th edition and have confirmed that it has minimal changes from the 6th edition.  Accordingly, PVPUSD would like to recommend the 7th edition for adoption and invite you to preview this textbook.  Print copies will be available at each high school and the district office; for your convenience, online access (until June 8) is provided below:
