Police Department Safety Operation

Targets Crosswalk Offenders

The Susanville Police Department conducted a traffic safety enforcement operation on August 31st, targeting drivers who failed to yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk. As a result, officers issued fifteen traffic citations and conducted more than twenty-five traffic stops.

The department focused on the most dangerous driver behaviors, speeding and distracted driving, along failing to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.

The SPD encourages everyone operating a motor vehicle to be observant and respectful to pedestrians who are attempting to utilize our city crosswalks to safely cross the roadway.

• Slow down and follow the speed limit. Be careful traveling through intersections.

• Look carefully for pedestrians when approaching crosswalks.

• Be patient when traveling and allow the pedestrian to cross safely, as they have the right of way.

• Never drive distracted or impaired.

• Pedestrians, please use crosswalks to ensure safety and always look both ways before crossing.

Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
